AUGUST 5, 2026
Welcome Back - First Day is Wednesday, August 12, 2026
It is a true pleasure to welcome you back for the 2026–2027 school year. Throughout the summer, thousands of students participated in learning opportunities across every grade span, from preschool through high school. We also expanded our paid Velocity internship program through our partnership with the Vista Chamber of Commerce, providing more than 100 high school students with meaningful workplace experiences that connected classroom learning to future careers.
Behind the scenes, our teachers and staff have been preparing for another year of learning. As we begin, I am reminded that education is, at its heart, an act of optimism. We begin every school year believing that every student can grow, every challenge can become an opportunity to learn, and every child has strengths waiting to be discovered. One of the things I have learned about schools is that the moments that matter most are rarely the ones we plan for. They often begin in ordinary ways: a lesson that finally makes sense, a question that sparks curiosity, or a conversation that gives a student the confidence to keep trying. Those moments happen because schools intentionally create the conditions where learning flourishes, curiosity grows, and students feel safe enough to take risks.
In Vista Unified, we believe in the Pulse of Possibility for every student. Every child enters our schools with strengths, interests, and aspirations. Our collective responsibility as educators, families, and community members is to help students discover those possibilities while providing the knowledge, skills, and experiences that prepare them for the future. Our district vision remains clear: every student will graduate as a resilient, agile learner and creative problem solver who navigates the world with confidence and kindness. Through our Learner Portrait, we continue developing students who are Kind and Confident, Curious and Connected, and Capable and Knowledgeable. Click HERE to read the entire letter.
A Year of Possibility
As we welcome students back for another school year, Vista Unified is excited to continue our work through the Pulse of Possibility: Pedagogy and Pathways. Every day, our goal is to create learning experiences that are engaging, challenging, and filled with purpose. Through strong Pedagogy, students experience joyful, meaningful learning. Through Pathways, they begin connecting what they're learning today to the opportunities and possibilities that await them tomorrow.
When students understand the why behind their learning, they become more curious, more confident, and more invested in their own success. Together with our families, we're helping every student discover their strengths, explore their interests, and build a future filled with possibility.
Helping Your Child Start Strong
You play an important role in setting the tone for a successful school year. Here are a few simple ways to support your child during the first weeks of school:
Establish calm, predictable morning and evening routines.
Ask about what they're learning and how it connects to their interests, dreams, or future goals.
Celebrate persistence, growth, and effort as much as accomplishments.
Remind them that they are surrounded by people who believe in them, both at home and at school.
Supporting a Smooth Transition
The beginning of a new school year brings excitement, new friendships, and fresh opportunities. It can also bring understandable feelings of nervousness or uncertainty. Vista Unified is committed to supporting the academic, social, and emotional well-being of every student.
Tips for a Smooth Start:
Begin practicing school routines before the first day, including bedtime, wake-up times, and morning responsibilities.
Arrange opportunities for your child to reconnect with familiar friends before school begins.
Visit the school campus ahead of time and, when appropriate, practice the arrival and pick-up routine.
Encourage confidence by celebrating small successes and milestones.
Listen to your child's concerns, validate their feelings, and reassure them that new routines become easier with time.
Additional Ways to Stay Connected:
Use calendars or checklists to help your family stay organized during the busy first weeks.
Keep routines as consistent as possible while everyone adjusts to the new schedule.
Attend Back-to-School Night to meet teachers and learn about classroom expectations.
Explore clubs, athletics, arts, leadership opportunities, and other activities that help students build friendships and a sense of belonging.
Make time to talk each day about what your child is enjoying, what they're learning, and any questions or concerns they may have.
If your child receives special education services, review their IEP and connect with the school team early to ensure a smooth transition into the new year.
Bell Schedules
The school bell schedules for the 2026–2027 school year are now available on the district website. You can also find your child's bell schedule on their school's website or by visiting vistausd.org and clicking Bell Schedules.
Save the Date: Back to School Night is Coming Soon!
Back to School Night is a fantastic opportunity for parents & guardians to learn more about their student’s teacher(s) and classes. These are not parent conferences, but rather an exciting opportunity to hear about what students will learn for the year, communication protocols, and more details from each teacher! This is not only important for our youngest students, but also for our oldest students! Please see specific information from your school regarding details. The general windows for Back to School Night in VUSD for 2026-27 are:
Elementary: August 5-20
Middle School: August 27th
High School: September 3-9
Specific details will be coming from your school team soon.
Healthy Nutrition
The Child Nutrition Services Department will continue to provide breakfast and lunch at no cost to all students during the 2026–2027 school year. Students participating in the AM/PM Programs will also be able to receive a supper meal at no cost. Click HERE for the Fall Menus.
We are closely monitoring the recent multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak. At this time, California is not one of the states affected, and all fresh produce served in our nutrition program over the past several weeks has been grown in California.
Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily removed lettuce from our menus while we continue to monitor guidance from public health officials. The health and safety of our students remains our highest priority.
For the latest information about the outbreak, please visit the CDC's Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Updates page: https://www.cdc.gov/cyclosporiasis/outbreaks/07-26/index.html.
Thank you for your continued trust and support.
Back-to-School Safety: Working Together for a Safe School Year
As we welcome students back for another exciting school year, Vista Unified School District is committed to providing safe, welcoming, and secure learning environments for every student. Safety is a shared responsibility, and we appreciate the partnership of our families and community.
The start of the school year brings increased traffic around our schools. Please allow extra travel time, slow down in school zones, follow posted speed limits, and watch carefully for students walking, biking, or crossing streets. Use designated drop-off and pick-up areas, follow staff directions, and avoid double parking or unsafe turns near campuses.
If your student walks, bikes, or travels independently to school, please remind them to use crosswalks, obey crossing guards and traffic signals, wear a properly fitted helmet when riding a bicycle or scooter, and stay alert by putting away phones and headphones while traveling to and from school.
We encourage everyone to help keep our schools safe. If you or your student notices something that seems unusual or concerning, please report it to a trusted school staff member or law enforcement. Safety concerns may also be reported anonymously through PSST! World, our confidential reporting system.
To help maintain secure campuses during the school day, all visitors must check in through the school's main front office, or Single Point of Entry. This Single Point of Entry is an important security measure that helps us account for everyone on campus and ensures students remain safe throughout the school day.
Thank you for partnering with us to make safety a priority. Together, we can help ensure every student arrives safely, has a successful day of learning, and returns home safely each afternoon. We wish all of our students, families, and staff a wonderful school year!
Ride To School: Bike Education
As we begin this school year we want to remind families of our “ride to school” protocol. Students in middle and high school need to obtain a permit to ride to school. Part of that process involves a one hour safety session. The next in person safety session is on August 19th at Vista Magnet Middle school from 5-6:15pm (all family members are welcome). If a student already has a permit they do not need to attend this session again, but are more than welcome to hear about any new CA laws. If a student has a permit, but never submitted the signed acknowledgement sheet, please sign and return this to their school. Here is our website with the most up to date information. Thank you for helping keep our students safe on their way to and from school!
Time to Update Your Student Information!
If you haven't done so already, the new school year is the perfect time to complete the data confirmation and ensure your family's information is up to date.
Please be sure to add all available emergency contacts so trusted individuals have permission to pick up your child if you are unavailable.
If your child is being cared for by a relative or other qualified caregiver, Student Support Services is available to assist families with completing a Caregiver Authorization Affidavit. Recent changes have expanded the types of relatives who may qualify, and these forms no longer require notarization. Contact Student Support Services at 760-726-2170 ext. 92180 or visit our office for more information and assistance.
During the data confirmation process, parents/guardians will also have the opportunity to review the Annual Notifications of the Rights and Responsibilities of Parents/Guardians and Students. If you ever need to access this document after completing data confirmation, it is available on the Student Support Services page of the Vista Unified School District website.
Expanded Learning, Beyond the School Day
As we welcome students back, we are also reflecting on a busy summer of learning and connection across Vista Unified. We recently completed our elementary and middle school AM/PM summer programs, along with summer school sessions at our middle and high schools. Across these settings, students had opportunities to stay engaged, receive academic support, build relationships, explore interests, and remain connected to their school communities.
Expanded Learning is not a single program. It brings together different programs and resources to provide students with academic support, enrichment, and safe, engaging places to learn and grow beyond the traditional school day. In Vista Unified, these opportunities reach students across our elementary, middle, high school, and alternative school settings. Through AM/PM Programs and other expanded learning opportunities, students can stay active, create, connect with others, strengthen skills, and continue learning throughout the year.
Our goal is straightforward, safe, quality enrichment that gives students more opportunities to learn, connect, and grow. We look forward to continuing this work alongside our families, schools, staff, and community throughout the 2026 to 2027 school year.
