The Paint Creek Connection Monday October 2, 2023

Dear Paint Creek Elementary Families,

Thank you so much for the support of our PTO Fall fundraiser. Our families have been very generous and students are very excited to SLIME the principal! We appreciate your generosity in support of our students and school. I know that our students are also looking forward to running the Dragon Warrior Course this Friday, October 6th.

Millage Proposal Information

Lake Orion Community Schools will have two millage proposals on the February/March presidential primary ballot, each designed to maintain the current tax levies. One will be for the 10-year operational millage, which the state of Michigan requires every public school district to pass to receive full foundation allowance for each student. The second proposal is to replace the 10-year sinking fund, which pays for infrastructure repairs (parking lots, HVAC, computers, etc.) throughout the district. Information about the millage proposals, including Frequently Asked Questions, is located on the School Election Information page.

Today and every day throughout this year, feel free to view district updates by visiting our Lake Orion and Paint Creek Elementary website https://www.lakeorionschools.org/paint-creek-elementary-school

Family Fun Fest

Please join me at the FAMILY FUN FEST on Weds. October 4th from 5:00 - 7:00pm. This is a FREE event for all students and their families. There will be a petting zoo, Team 302 (robotics), crafts and games as well as First Responders, free food, and a quiet room available for those children who may need to take a break from all of the activities. I would love to see all of our Paint Creek families there! I'll be looking for you!

DISTINGUISHED DRAGON STAFF RECOGNITION

Lake Orion Community Schools has launched a program in 2023-24 to recognize LOCS staff members for their excellence.

The intent of the Distinguished Dragon program is to ensure that staff members who go above and beyond their regular duties are appreciated. The additional effort or support can range from helping an individual to helping a group or any effort that seems worthy of praise.

The staff member can be nominated by a student, parent, community member or a colleague by completing the form at LakeOrionSchools.org/DistinguishedDragon. We ask for the name and contact information of the person submitting the nomination to follow up with specific questions if necessary. Please make sure to select the appropriate school/department form so the message is routed in the proper direction.

Please complete the form entirely so the individual can be appropriately honored for their contributions.

Student Electronic Devices

At the elementary level, we encourage all individual student devices to stay at home. Students do not need their devices during the school day and most often these devices end up causing a disruption within the learning environment which interrupts student learning.

If you feel strongly that your child should bring their cell phone, smart watch, i-pad, etc. Please email me at lauren.smith@lok12.org so we may talk about your concern. There is a VERY small number of devices that we approve each year based on true need. If this is the case for your child, we will add your child's name to our Approved Device list.

Please know that our school and our staff are not responsible for any student devices brought from home. If the device is lost, stolen, broken, etc. Damages/repairs will fall solely on the family.

Positivity Project Trait of the Week

Dear Families,

Each week I will communicate with you the P2 Trait that our students will be learning about each day. Please have your children share with you the trait and what they learned.

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Open-Mindedness.

Open-mindedness means you like to consider new ideas and try new things. You examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions.

Open-mindedness is the willingness to actively search for evidence that goes against one’s favored opinions, plans, or goals. Open-minded individuals are able to weigh all evidence fairly, when it is available. They see the other side and fight the tendency to have a bias for their own views. And, rather than favoring the socially dominant views, they give attention to those that are less dominant.

Open-minded individuals are often good listeners and called upon to provide a balanced viewpoint. Both listening and the ability to deliver reasonable and practical advice are marks of good friends and confidantes. This strength helps individuals form meaningful and lasting relationships.

Next Week's P2 Trait is...

Being Present and Giving Others My Attention. This means when I’m with other people, I’m present and give them my full attention.

This element of the Other People Mindset is so important today due to the increasing number of distractions vying for our time and attention. Phone calls, text messages, emails, social media notifications all have the dangerous capacity to pull us away from the present moment and, what’s most important -- our relationships with other people.

Just like plants need sunlight to grow, our relationships need attention. If we don’t give our attention to the people we’re building relationships with -- whether family members, close friends, or even distant colleagues -- we can’t build those relationships. It’s vitally important that we pick our heads up from our cell phones and truly listen to other people when they’re talking. A positive culture is built on positive relationships -- and we can’t build positive relationships without attention.

Reporting Student Absences

If your child is going to be absent from school, please call the Paint Creek Main Office at (248) 814-1724 to report your child's absence. By reporting the absence and reason for absence, we do not need to call your home. Please help our office team focus on the students at school by reporting your child's absence prior to the school day starting. Thank you!

Celebrating Birthdays at Paint Creek Elementary

Birthdays are such an important day for our students and we love to celebrate. Families do not ever need to provide a special birthday treat. However, if you would like to, we encourage non-edible items such as special pencils, cool bracelets, small trinkets, etc. If you would like to provide an edible treat, it must be individually packaged and purchased. No homemade items are allowed due to allergens. Please be VERY aware of any allergies within your child's classroom and refrain from providing a treat with the allergen present. ALL treats will be sent home and cannot be eaten in the classroom.

Again, no treats need to be provided as our teachers and staff LOVE celebrating each and every child on their special day!
