Principal's Notes
What an odd week with the snow day on Monday, the delayed start on Tuesday, and the early release on Wednesday! Everyone managed the adjusted schedules really well though! Kindergarten students enjoyed a field trip to Norwell High School on Wednesday for the World Language Fair that the high school students and World Language Department put together for them. It's always a great field trip for the students to learn about other cultures and languages and to interact with high school students in such a positive way. On Wednesday, all staff participated in the district wide professional development on Universal Design for Learning and came away with some instructional strategies they can implement in their classrooms to support all learners. Although it was a short week, we managed to pack in lots of learning!
On Monday, February 2nd, we'll be celebrating School Counselor Appreciation Day. While we miss Mrs. Walsh while she is on parental leave, we have been so fortunate to have Ms. Mullen working at Cole School. Her commitment to the students, staff, and families have been noticed from day one with her consistent follow through, warm and approachable demeanor, and strong skill set to support SEL learning. Please take a moment to let her know how much your child or family appreciates her with a quick note, card, or email.
We'll also be celebrating the hardest working School Crossing Guard, Mrs. Mary Wood, on School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day on Friday, February 6th. You have likely noticed Mrs. Wood at her post each school day without fail and no matter the weather. She keeps our kids safe and the traffic flowing. Please offer a warm wave and thank you or a quick note of appreciation to Mary if you have a moment.
Magnificent Meerkats
This week's Magnificent Meerkats were nominated for consistently demonstrating expected behaviors at Cole School. Not only are they kind to others, but they are also showing hard work and perseverence in their school work. Way to go, Meerkats!
- She has grown so much as a student and has shown hard work and perseverance especially in math! She has stuck with tricky problems and never gives up and I am so proud of her efforts!
- He has been working hard in class to complete activities and assignments within particular time frames and raise his hand more often in class. We love to see him engaging in our daily lessons and sharing his ideas with his classmates. We look forward to seeing this continue!
- When a classmate had his sweatshirt on backwards, he made his backwards too.

School Counseling Corner
In alignment with our new Second Step unit on Empathy & Kindness, Kindergarten and 2nd grade will have Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in the gym next week with me. Kindergarten will read “The Judgmental Flower” by Julia Cook and 2nd grade will read “John’s Turn” by Mac Barnett. I’ve included links to read-alouds of the books so you can see what your child is learning about during SEL.
Kindergarten - The Judgmental Flower
2nd grade - John’s Turn
In grade 3, our new Second Step unit focuses on learning about friendship and kind things friends can do for each other. See if you can practice at home with your child by taking turns naming kind acts you can do for a friend. Grade 4 students are learning about empathy and understanding someone else’s point of view. You can help at home by asking “Would you rather?” questions and taking time to discuss both of your answers! In grade 5, students are learning how to apply their empathy skills in real life to solve a community problem. You can pose problem solving questions to your child like, “If you could change something about Cole School, what would you change? Think about how it would affect EVERYONE - younger students, teachers, parents, and the Norwell community.”
Specialists' Scoop
Jumping, rolling, and weight of hands actions were used as we continued our Gymnastics Unit. Being safe, serious, and quiet, K-2 worked on body control while traveling creatively (i.e. bear, crab, seal walk) on different body parts. Third graders focused on the stillness of balances (i.e. candlestick, warrior and bridge). Fourth graders, while working with a partner, were challenged to choose either a jump, roll, or weight on hands action to mirror and match. Fifth graders had an additional level of complexity to include a partner balance.

"Roses as Red, Violets are Blue, How Sweet it is to be Taught by You!"
Let's fill our teacher’s vases this Valentine's Day! For only $5 you can purchase a beautiful rose (or roses!) for a teacher or staff member of your choosing. NEF will hand deliver the flowers to the lucky recipient Valentine's Day week.
With the purchase of one or more flowers you are not only showing your favorite Norwell educator how much they are appreciated, but you are also supporting the NEF, which provides funding for innovative educational programs, activities and materials for all Norwell Public Schools.
This is also a great opportunity to not only celebrate our deserving classroom teachers, but to recognize the unsung heroes of our elementary schools - nurses, technology teachers, aides, administrators, office staff, special education teachers, etc.
So let's fill our teacher’s vases this Valentine's Day! Click here to get started
