Daily Arrival by 7:30 AM is growing!

This week, Gompers students achieved a 94% attendance rate. Every day your student is at school, is another day for them to succeed, achieve, connect with friends, and learn new things. Give your student every opportunity to succeed by being at school by 7:30 AM daily. Together we can achieve our goal of 95% or greater attendance rate this week.

On Thursday, 10.31.24, students are welcome to wear their costumes at school. There are just a few guidelines to follow:

  • Masks are not allowed.
  • All make-up must be applied at home.
  • Hats, gloves, inflatables, wigs, and additional props are all allowed, but a teacher may request for students to remove them temporarily in class so students may see the board or adequately participate in the lesson.
  • All costumes must not prevent students from fully participating in PE or any class.
  • Costumes/make-up displaying blood, guts, gore, sexual, racially offensive displays, weapons (real or fake), or promoting the consumption of drugs or alcohol are strictly prohibited.
  • The dress code, outside of the exceptions listed above, must still be met on this day.

We encourage all our students to have a wonderful time and enjoy this day in a joyous and fun celebration. If you have any questions, please call our office at 815.727.5276 during school hours.

Why is 50% considered missing?

If you see an assignment on Aspen with a 50%, it likely means your student did not complete it. Teachers are not entering 0% because overcoming a 0 in the grade book makes it extremely difficult for students due to how averaging works. However, 50% is still an F, but it allows students to climb out of a failing grade. Check Aspen and review the percentages. If your student has anything marked as 50%, ask them to complete the missing assignment and turn it in. Click HERE for a great article on the No Zero concept and how it supports student achievement.

Do you want to tryout for a sport?

Your student needs a sports physical to try out for an athletic team at Gompers. Sports physicals are valid for an entire year. The athletic season for each sport is as follows:

  • Girls Basketball September - November (currently in session)
  • Boys Basketball October - February
  • Cheer October - February
  • Wrestling December - March
  • Scholastic Bowl January - May
  • Boys & Girls Soccer March-May

Student ID

All students and staff are required to wear their IDs at school daily. Students need their ID to ride the bus, borrow books, attend home games, purchase items at the SOAR store, and much more. Of course, this is also a safety issue to ensure all students and staff are easily identified as belonging at Gompers. Ask your students to ensure they have their Student ID and wear it daily at school.

End the Hate

What is Bullying? The state of Illinois defines it as follows:

Definitions from 105ILCS 5/27-23.7 Bullying includes cyberbullying and means any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct, including communications made in writing or electronically, directed toward a student or students that has or can be reasonably predicted to have the effect of one or more of the following:

  1. Placing the student or students in reasonable fear of harm to the student’s or students’ person or property;

  2. Causing a substantially detrimental effect on the student’s or students’ physical or mental health;

  3. Substantially interfering with the student’s or students’ academic performance; or

  4. Substantially interfering with the student’s or students’ ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school.

Bullying may take various forms, including without limitation one or more of the following: harassment, threats, intimidation, stalking, physical violence, sexual harassment, sexual violence, theft, public humiliation, destruction of property, or retaliation for asserting or alleging an act of bullying. This list is meant to be illustrative and non-exhaustive.

Cyberbullying means bullying through the use of technology or any electronic communication, including without limitation any transfer of signs, signals, writing, images, sounds, data, or intelligence of any nature transmitted in whole or in part by a wire, radio, electromagnetic system, photo-electronic system, or photo-optical system, including without limitation electronic mail, Internet communications, instant messages, or facsimile communications. Cyberbullying includes the creation of a webpage or weblog in which the creator assumes the identity of another person or the knowing impersonation of another person as the author of posted content or messages if the creation or impersonation creates any of the effects enumerated in the definition of bullying. Cyberbullying also includes the distribution by electronic means of a communication to more than one person or the posting of material on an electronic medium that may be accessed by one or more persons if the distribution or posting creates any of the effects enumerated in the definition of bullying.

At Gompers Jr. High, we take bullying very seriously. Bullying at school, in the community, or on social media is never acceptable or should be taken lightly. If your child is experiencing any form of bullying, the first step is to report the incident to an Academic Advisor, Counselor, or Social Worker. The Gompers staff is here to help and ask that you report bullying as soon as you know about it. Please contact the following individuals via email or call our office to speak with them at 815.727.5276 during school hours. Your partnership is essential in helping keep all our students safe from bullying.

From the Gompers Health Office

STUDENT HEALTH HISTORY and LIFE-THREATENING CONDITIONS

If your student has a significant health history, life threatening allergy, or special medical concern including asthma, diabetes, seizures, or other medical conditions please contact the school nurse so that we can create an Emergency Health Care Plan. A PHYSICIAN’S NOTE IS REQUIRED if your child has FOOD allergies so we can provide substitutions. It must be a DIAGNOSED allergy and not just a sensitivity.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

If your child must receive medication (prescription or over-the-counter) in order to be in school, you will need a "Medication Authorization Form” completed by a licensed healthcare provider or physician also signed and dated by the parent/guardian.

DIABETICS

We must have a School Diabetic Care Plan on file from your physician with medication orders (if needed) in case of emergencies and to assist and care for all diabetic students.

If you have any questions please contact the school nurse, Melissa Quitman, at mquitman@joliet86.org or at 815-727-5276
