Message from the Principal
Hello Lincoln Families,
Welcome to the new school year! It has been so much fun welcoming our students back into the building. We have had a great start to the school year, filled with learning, new friendships, and positive energy in our classrooms and hallways.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported our recent PTO-sponsored Fun Run! It was a fun and successful event. The funds our students raised directly help our PTO support Lincoln with programs, resources, and events. We are so grateful to our PTO leaders, volunteers, and families for making this fundraiser such a success.
At Lincoln Elementary, creating a safe, positive, and welcoming environment for everyone is our top priority. Our school wide expectations- Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible- are the foundation of how our students and staff show their Lions Pride each day. We encourage you to ask your child how they demonstrate these values in their classroom, on the playground, and throughout the school day.
Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for Fall Conferences on Monday, October 26th, and Thursday, October 29th. These meetings are a wonderful opportunity to partner with your child's teacher to set your children up for a successful school year. Please watch for conference sign-up reminders and instructions coming out soon.
Thank you again for your incredible partnership and support as we kicked off this new school year together. We are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead!
Michelle Zimmerman
Principal

Office Reminders
Student Birthdays Reminder
As stated in our back to school newsletter and the family handbook, birthday treats will no longer be permitted at school beginning this school year. We appreciate your understanding and support as we prioritize a safe and productive learning environment for all students.
Early Student Pickups
If you need to pick up your student early, please note that you do not need to call the school ahead of time. When you arrive, come directly to the main office (Door 1) to sign out your child. For our students' safety, you will be required to present your driver's license to be scanned by our office staff. Once your ID is verified, we will call your student down to the office to meet you. Please be sure to plan accordingly and be aware of your student's lunch and recess schedule, as it may take a few extra minutes to retrieve them during those times. Early pickups should be prior to 3:10 to avoid disrupting the end of day dismissal.
Parking in Main Parking Lot
Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. To ensure clear visibility, smooth traffic flow, and emergency vehicle access, please remember that parking or idling in designated "No Parking" areas is strictly prohibited. If you need to leave your vehicle or wait for an extended period, please park in a marked visitor space. We appreciate your cooperation.
Complete Back to School Forms Online
REMINDER!! All families should complete back-to-school forms online:
Visit ahschools.us
Select “login” from the menu.
Select “family login.”
Proceed to complete back-to-school forms for the 2026-27 school year.
Why it matters: It’s important that each family completes the verification process and the online back-to-school forms before the first day of school. Verification ensures that each student’s school has confirmed emergency contact information and releases for the safety of each student.
What’s in it for you: Even if families’ contact information has not changed, it’s important to log in to access a variety of other student information in the coming weeks, including:
Class schedules and teacher assignments.
Transportation information, if relevant.
Receive additional educational benefits, discounts and reduced fees.
High school students will not be able to enroll in fall activities until the back to school verification process is complete.
Anywhere, on-the-go: Families may complete the verification on their own time, whenever it’s convenient. If you prefer to utilize the ParentVUE mobile app to access your student’s information, please note that the app has been updated. Read more about downloading the updated version of ParentVUE.
Kindergarten News
Kindergarteners are adjusting to school, learning the routines and making new friends! We had so much fun working on our fine motor and literacy skills while learning about colors!
This month in CKLA, we are exploring our first unit, Star Light, Star Bright: Nursery Rhymes and Fables which is helping the students learn vocabulary and build phonemic awareness.Toward the end of October, we will move on to a unit all about the five senses. We will have so much fun using our senses to explore apples and pumpkins! During our Bridge2Read time, we will focus on phonemic awareness, letter sound correspondence and letter formation.
In math, students will learn to quickly recognize how many objects are in a collection (up to 5) without counting, compare sets using the words more and less, develop number sense with combinations that make 5 and 10, count objects and match the quantity to the written numeral and build with 2-dimensional shapes.
We are looking forward to meeting with our kindergarten families during fall conferences!

First Grade News
Hello 1st Grade Families!
We are so happy to be back with your students! During this month we are working really hard at learning new routines, learning new classroom rules, and just learning how to be a 1st grader. So far your students are rocking 1st grade! Hopefully we can keep the ball rolling.
In math this month we are working on identifying and creating numbers, skip counting, and building numbers on our bead rack. We will continue our work with our bead racks all school year!
In ELA we are learning about fables from around the world and working on identifying items on our story map, such as characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. We will continue story mapping different ways throughout the school year. Keep an eye open for different types of story maps coming home. In Bridge2Read we are working on word families, so far we have focused on… -ad,-an, it-in, -at. We will continue word families for this month! Your students are becoming very good with our routines and getting more and more confident!
A quick reminder… students should bring a snack everyday for themselves, as the weather gets cooler- please send the correct apparel to go outside. PLEASE send a water bottle, and their take home folder to school everyday!
Thanks for working with us as a team! Please reach out with any questions!
Second Grade News
We are off to a fantastic start in second grade! We have been working hard on building our classroom communities. Our Purposeful People focus this month is on Kindness and Respect. We will be using what we learn to help build our classroom respect agreements. During the course of the school year we will be working on developing a community of readers. We will work as a group and share our ideas of various texts that include all genres of literature.
This year we will be using a curriculum called Bridge2Read which is a foundational literacy program for kindergarten through third grade that provides explicit, science-of-reading-aligned instruction in phonological awareness and word study. We will also be using an additional curriculum called Amplify CKLA. CLKA will focus on the Knowledge Strand to develop background knowledge, oral comprehension, and academic vocabulary in a wide array of topics across social studies, science, literature and the arts. The first domain for CKLA will focus on fairy tales and tall tales. These fairy tales will remind students of the elements of fiction and will be a good reintroduction to the practice of listening and learning. Writing in this domain will focus on the genre of narrative writing.
Please remember to contact the office for any changes in afternoon transportation. Stay tuned to the Lincoln newsletter for upcoming exciting events happening at Lincoln and in second grade. We look forward to an awesome year!
Mrs. Hustad, Mrs. Pitzl, and Mr. Robertson
Third Grade News
It has been a wonderful start to the school year in 3rd grade. Getting used to a new schedule, new routine and a late lunch has been an adjustment. But we have done it well. It has been so much fun getting to know each other and starting all the fun learning that takes place in 3rd grade.
In CKLA, we started Unit 1 which is called Timeless Tales: Classic Stories. Students are introduced to several classic tales during this unit. One being The Wind in the Willows, a classic tale written by Kenneth Graahame. We also will read two other classic tales, “ Mulan” and “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. It is a wonderful Unit with rich vocabulary and stories for great discussions and writing.
In math Unit 1 is about Addition and Subtraction Patterns. The students will work on community building and addition/subtraction strategies for facts to 20. They are also introduced to multi-digit addition on the open number line. We work with a collection of story problems that prompt them to practice their skills with multi- digit addition and subtraction.
One last hit this month of course was the Fun Run. Which is always a lot of fun!!
Mrs. Arendt, Mrs. Luongvan and Ms. Skinner
Fourth Grade News
Greetings Fourthling Families,
We are off to a great start in fourth grade. We have started our second year of Functional Morphology and CKLA. For Functional Morphology, we are studying how words are put together using morphemes. We have started by adding prefixes to base and root words, and will continue with prefixes for a few more weeks. In CKLA, we are finishing up Unit 1. This unit examines the genre of personal narratives, which consists of nonfiction works written by a first-person narrator who was involved in the events being described. Students read five personal narratives and identify the elements of the genre. These elements include events proceeding in a logical sequence, dialogue that shows character, vivid descriptive language, characters with defining traits, sensory details, figurative language, and strong introductions and conclusions. Please have your student read 20-30 minutes or more each night.
In math, we are also finishing up Unit 1. We have been reviewing single digit multiplication strategies, as well as models for solving multiplication problems. We will be creating our very first math arts integrated project- Multiplication Wheel of Design. Students will combine the products that they find on their own wheel with repeated design to create a beautiful work of art. In the coming weeks, we will move on to Unit 2 in math.
We look forward to partnering with all of our families as we move through this year!
Ms. Carlson, Mrs. Gaspar and Ms. Halverson
Fifth Grade News
Welcome 5th Grade families to another awesome year at Lincoln. We are hard at work in all of our subjects to kick off the year.
In math students are revisiting multiplication strategies from past years. Ask your students about Brad’s Baseballs, they should have a lot to share. In science students have begun identifying mystery substances. We are discussing properties of matter and learning how to make fair tests. In Reading students are working on personal narratives. They will soon be learning about Rosa Parks in their reading texts.
Family support will ensure a smooth and successful year, so please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teacher with any questions or concerns.
Mr. Gamache, Mrs. Mercer and Ms. Sahlberg
Arts News
Hello Lincoln Families!
My name is Andrea Whitcomb and I am the half-time Curriculum Integration Coordinator, supporting the arts at Lincoln. As a specialty school for the arts, Lincoln is committed to embedding the arts into daily learning, encouraging students to become artful thinkers, creators, and problem-solvers. We uplift personal expression and human connection, and hope to support your child as they discover and grow.
We already have so many amazing experiences planned for our students, including residencies, field trips, and arts integration in the classroom. One goal for this year is to increase literacy through engagement in the arts. Check out some ideas to try at home: 12 Art Activities to Build Literacy Skills.
Music Opportunity! If your child is in 3rd-5th grade and they are interested in learning how to play an instrument or want to sing in a choir, then we have great news! Community Education is partnering with Bach to Rock again to offer instrumental and vocal music classes after school at Lincoln. Instruments, books, and accessories will be provided by the school at no charge. While there is a charge to participate, our generous PTO is able to offer scholarships. Please contact Tricia Josephs, our Community Education Programmer, for more information.

Attend To Achieve
Families can support student success, consider the impact of school attendance
Students need to attend school to achieve in school. Anoka-Hennepin Schools aims to share attendance and resources and tips with families to support student success.
Every day counts: Research shows that missing 10 percent of school negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month! (Attendance Works.) District student services staff and attendance secretaries at each school may reach out to families throughout the school year if your student is at risk of truancy.
Why it matters: The more involved students are in school, the more likely they are to enjoy and want to attend school. Students who attend school 95% of the time are:
More likely to be on track to graduate on time.
Do better in reading and math.
Are less likely to fail a class.
Are more likely to have the credits needed to graduate.
Families can make a difference: We can all work together to support students. Consider how you can help your student attend to achieve!
Teach your child to organize their clothes, lunch and books for school the night before, so they are prepared in the morning.
Encourage your child to participate in before- or after-school activities. Students who are involved at school usually enjoy school more and are more likely to want to attend each day.
Schedule non-emergency health and dental appointments outside of school hours; and schedule vacations for days your children don’t have school.
If you know your child needs to miss school, contact the office as soon as possible to coordinate plans as soon as possible.
