Decatur community,

It almost feels like we stuffed two weeks of activities into three days this past week. The junior high played its last home football and volleyball games on Thursday. After the Early Release on Friday, the varsity football team played it's NFLesque 3:00 game. The Junior High was back at it on Friday night with their first school dance. Finally, the annual Home Volleyball Invitational saw the building alive at 7:00am and active over 12 hours later.

It all went well because of the hard work of so many people. As the old saying goes, "It takes a village."

SHOUTOUTS SHOUTOUTS

These shoutouts are directed at the Oberlin villagers that made it happen this week through all of those events.

Shoutout to Athletic Director Brandon Gehring. Over the past few months, I have gotten to know Mr. Gehring and see him in action. I am highly impressed by how thorough his work is and how much time and effort he commits to the programs of Oberlin. He managed this past week's odd schedule with ease. Whether it's creating the bracket, guiding teams and officials, communicating with staff working the event, or line judging, he's right there doing it all.

Shoutout to Mr. Gannon Reichert and his wife Mary. Mr. Reichert has taken over the reigns as the Junior High STUCO sponsor this year which means the dance is his show. The students I talked to on Saturday said that they had a fun time at the dance, and most of the students stayed the whole time. Thank you, Reicherts.

Shoutout to Mr. Tim Breth. Mr. Breth made a special appearance at the Junior High Dance to make sure that the baton was properly passed to Mr. Reichert. He did a little of his magic and got the first real dancers dancing.

Shoutout to sophomore students Sophia Davis and Jessiah McDougal, as well as freshman Sage Bryan, for giving their time Friday night to DJ the dance.

Shoutout to Mr. Brad Persinger and Mrs. Lisa Johnson for manning the concession stand all day. Let's be honest. Not all concession stand duties are equal. It was a busy day filled with 5 schools (both Varsity and JV) and their fans in our building most of the day. Mr. Persinger and the band had a special "Walking Taco" portion that was very popular.

Shoutout to parent Shayla Bailey who donated her sauces for the taco bar. Her pineapple salsa has been ranked highly in competitions and definitely garners the most intriguing salsa award.

Shoutout to the volleyball team and coaches for their decision to wear pink at the Home Invitational. Several of the teams participated in the Breast Cancer Awareness theme this past weekend.

Shoutout to the sophomore class for being the staff that was needed to run the concession stand. I was in and out of the gyms and concession stands myself all day, and I saw almost every sophomore that wasn't a volleyball player in action in the concession stand at some point.

Shoutout to every student that showed up to support their team on a Saturday. It's always great to see students come to support their fellow teammates, especially when it is on a Saturday.

Shoutout to Mrs. Jenny Tally. There was a tremendous Hospitality Room that was provided for coaches, workers, etc. Mrs. Tally was up there multiple times checking on the food and making sure that there was enough. There were several compliments made by those that had access about the great hospitality room.

Shoutout to every worker that worked a scorebook, a score clock, or called a line during a match. Teachers, subs, parents, you name it. There are too many to list here right now, but nothing runs as smoothly as it does without each person involved.

Shoutout to Ms. Janee Davis and her XC team. With all that happened near the end of the week, I almost forgot our home XC meet. Earlier in the week, her team performed very well once again. Ms. Davis was very involved in communicating with her racers before, during, and after the race.

That's going to do it for this week. October is here. I am honestly about to give up on predicting the weather, but maybe, just maybe, October will bring with it the Fall so many have been waiting for. The weathermen are predicting a drop, but they have been wrong far too often lately. Maybe, if we all think cooler thoughts, we can help with the shift. After all, it takes a village.

Until next week,

Jeremy Holloway
