Town of Sunnyvale Weekly Update
Sunnyvale Police Warn Residents About Criminal Activity
The Sunnyvale Police Department is warning everyone to be alert to criminal activity targeting the elderly and vulnerable residents.
Two recent thefts in the Barnes Bridge Road and Mansfield Lane areas involved a suspect posing as a Dallas Water Utilities employee to gain access to a victim’s home. While the elderly homeowner monitored a water faucet, the suspect took valuable items and fled the residence.
Sunnyvale detectives confirmed that similar crimes have been reported in other communities and that Dallas Water Utilities personnel are NOT working in Sunnyvale. Detectives have identified possible suspects in this crime and continue to investigate which occurred on March 8 between 4 and 4:15 p.m. If you have surveillance video or any information related to this investigation, please contact Detective David Maitlen at 972-203-4130 or david.maitlen@townofsunnyvale.org.
Moisture Barrier Installation to Protect Road Investments
The Town of Sunnyvale is working to protect and enhance our community’s recent investments in road improvement.
In 2022, the Town began the initial phases of a major road rehabilitation project. The purpose of the project was to rebuild aging roadways to enhance safety and durability while also preserving the rural character of Sunnyvale with its signature asphalt roads and bar ditches. This program involved a full excavation of the roadways enabling the installation of a new roadway base consisting of lime and cement treatment followed by two separate layers of asphalt – a Base Course (Type B) and Drive Course (Type D). Previous road repaving efforts usually just involved adding additional layers of asphalt without treating base failures to ensure a proper road foundation.
To further protect the recent investment in our roadway system, the Town will soon be installing a series of moisture barriers along sections of roadway to help minimize pavement cracking. Premature cracking often occurs along sections of asphalt roads where bar ditches exist. This is caused by moisture leaching out from under the pavement because of nearby tree roots as well as evaporation through the road embankments next to the bar ditches. The moisture barriers are approximately 6 inches wide and 36 inches deep and help prevent moisture loss by locking in soil moisture and preventing root invasion under the pavement.
Installing moisture barriers is considered a “best management practice” for preserving the integrity of road investments. Installing these barriers can sometimes negatively impact adjacent trees over time as the barriers remove the moisture source from under the roadway. Due to this concern, the Town hired an arborist to help identify optimal locations for moisture barriers while still preserving the tree canopy that establishes Sunnyvale’s rural character.
Project maps and other information will soon be available at TownofSunnyvale.org/RoadProjects.
