Welcome to the BHS Express
A newsletter keeping you informed about Batavia High School
Hello Bulldog Families.
We’ve enjoyed another busy week at BHS as we ran our Flex A and Flex B schedules so all of our students could take the Restart Readiness assessments to help teachers establish a beginning-of-the-year baseline as we help our students throughout the school year. These assessments mirror the End of Course (EOC) assessments that are required for high school graduation. Teachers review these results and use this information to make instructional shifts to better support all of our BHS students.
Please review the “upcoming important dates” section below. You will notice that we’ve added school picture dates for both students in grades 9-11 and for our seniors. We will be providing more information as we get closer to these dates.
To continue the learning from Haidt’s, The Anxious Generation, the writer spends a portion of the book addressing how certain years are critical to childhood development. He states, “Social learning occurs throughout childhood, but there may be a sensitive period for cultural learning that spans roughly ages 9 to 15. Lessons learned and identities formed in these years are likely to imprint, or stick, more than at other ages. These are the crucial sensitive years of puberty. Unfortunately, they are also the years in which most adolescents in developed countries get their own phones and move their social lives online.”
Once again, this is a cautionary warning of how the constant online connections may actually change our young people. As parents, are we monitoring the amount of time our young people spend “connected”? Are we setting any limits on how much time they spend on their phones? It might be worth a discussion with your high school students about how they are using their phones and what they tend to scroll through while using them.
As a quick reminder, there is no school on Monday, September 1st for our Labor Day Holiday. We will see everyone back at BHS on Tuesday, September 2nd.
In service to our Bulldogs.

#EveryBulldogEveryDay
Hi, Bulldog Families.
This week, I sent out reminders regarding chromebook expectations. I wanted to share a couple reminders that we shared with our students.
The expectation is that they have their device charged and ready each day. If it is not charged, students should be carrying their charger in their bookbag. We have a limited amount of loaner chromebooks available.
Students are also responsible for any damage to their device and are provided a charger when issued a chromebook. If a student needs a replacement charger, we charge $35. The better option is to buy a replacement for $9 on Amazon. When a student approaches graduation, they are required to return their Chromebook and charger in order to walk in graduation.
Have a great weekend.

Hello, Families,
The second full week of school is in the books. I’ve enjoyed engaging with our students from a different perspective as we are still early in the school year. There are lots of new names and faces to learn, but I’ve had the pleasure of communicating with our new students and freshmen.
Please remind your students, if they are driving to school in the mornings and leaving in the afternoon, to drive safely. Please be aware of our support staff, teachers, and resource officers as they help navigate the parking lots and crosswalks each morning and afternoon. We want everyone to be safe.
Thank you, and have a nice weekend.
Joe Moorehead, Dean of Students
