CCA Chapel

On Friday, sixth grade opened chapel with pledges, singing and prayer. Pastor Justin Wright, from Allen Street Baptist, gave a message based on Mark 10:35-44 and talked about best friends, specifically what the Bible says about how we should live as friends.

As Jesus is walking with His disciples, James and John said Teacher, we want You to do something for us. You will have glory in Your Kingdom, let one of us sit to your right and one of us sit to your left. Jesus told them they didn't know what they were asking. Do we ever answer a question before we think about the question we've been asked?

Jesus is their Teacher. The disciples want to do everything He has done, but they don't know the future and how things are going to go. Jesus cannot choose who sits at His right or left. The disciples are just like us, they get into arguments and don't all get along. They are tense with each other and they don't really understand what it means to follow Jesus.

Rulers love to show their power over people. Often times the people at the top think they are the most important. Jesus says to love and treat each other like everyone matters. If you want to see the Kingdom, you must love, serve, give, be available for others, be complimentary, be helpful and be radically generous.

Pastor Wright gave CCA students a challenge, he told us to fill in the gaps and serve in other ways. Be polite, let others go in front of you, and pray for those who are having a hard time.

HS Students compete at SBU event

On Friday, November 17th, CCA high school students went to Southwest Baptist University to participate in the College Preparatory Championships. Last year, CCA went to their first Championship event since COVID happened. Students had the opportunity to test in multiple subjects and submit art pieces as well. A presentation on taking dual credit classes both online and in person through SBU was given. This is a new program that just began this year. Students were able to tour the campus and meet professors. The trip was very informative. CCA left campus before awards were given out; therefore, students do not yet know how they placed in events. --Kennedy

CCA's November Character Trait: Peace

This week we asked three CCA students what peace means to them. First, we asked Dakoda V, from 11th grade, and she said, "peace means that you are not worried about anything and it is when you are happy." We then spoke to Katie L, from 8th grade, and she replied with, "peace is treating others the way you want to be treated." Lastly, we asked London, from 2nd grade, and she said, "peace is when you think of God and when you feel him near you." -Audrey

Survey Says... Turkey or Ham?

This week's survey says question is a big debate, especially during this time of year. What would you rather eat on Thanksgiving, turkey or ham? Well, the CCA vote is in, and with a vote of 72 to 39, turkey won. According to blog.goldbelly.com, ham is easier to cook, more juicy, and there are several types to chose from, while turkey is healthier, traditional and has a more versatile flavor. -Vivian

Pumpkin Roll Recipe

PUMPKIN CAKE INGREDIENTS:

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (*or see below for substitution)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup pumpkin puree
  • optional: powdered sugar (to sprinkle on at the end!)

CREAM CHEESE FILLING INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 (8 ounce) brick cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Preheat oven to 375° F. Line a 15 x 10-inch jelly roll pan with parchment paper, leaving an extra 1-inch of parchment sticking up on both 15-inch sides of the pan so that you can easily lift the cake out after baking. (If you’d like the parchment to stick to the bottom of the pan more easily, sprinkle a little bit of water on the pan and then press the parchment paper on top of it. You can also lightly mist the top of the parchment paper with cooking spray for easier cake release afterwards, although it’s not required.)
  • Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, pumpkin pie spice and salt in a large mixing bowl until combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk eggs and granulated sugar for 1 minute until thick. Add in the vanilla and pumpkin, and whisk until just combined. Fold in the flour mixture with a rubber spatula, and stir together until just combined.
  • Spread the batter evenly into prepared pan. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes, or until top of cake springs back when touched. Carefully lift the parchment paper and cake out onto a flat (and heat-safe) surface. Then slowly, use your hands to roll the cake — rolling from the short end to the short end — until it is completely rolled up. Transfer the cake roll to a wire rack, and cool until it reaches room temperature.
  • While the cake is cooling, make the cream cheese filling (see below).
  • Once the cake has reached room temperature, transfer the cake roll to a flat surface, and carefully it until it is flat again (or mostly flat, it’s ok if the ends curl up a bit). Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over cake, leaving a 3/4-inch border on all sides. Then carefully re-roll the cake, gently peeling away the parchment paper as you roll until you can completely remove and discard it. Tightly wrap the pumpkin roll in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least one hour.
  • Remove and unwrap the pumpkin roll and transfer it to your serving dish. Lightly dust the pumpkin roll on all sides with powdered sugar, if you would like. Then slice* and serve.
  • If you have leftovers, just re-wrap the pumpkin roll in plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • TO MAKE THE CREAM CHEESE FILLING:

    1. Whisk together cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl until smooth. If the filling is too thin, add more powdered sugar. If it is too thick, add a half teaspoon or two of water. (You want a medium consistency so that the filling is easy to spread, but not too warm or thin that it will ooze out of the cake when you’re rolling it up.)
