From Classroom to Career: WHS Student Achieves Welding Qualification
Several times a year, WHS students have the chance to earn certifications in various welding techniques. A representative from the American Welding Society visits campus to administer the tests. In the most recent round, five students participated — and two students, Spencer Zorza and Carter LaCosse, successfully earned the AWS Vertical Up Structural Plate Qualification.
Congratulations, Spencer and Carter, on this impressive achievement!

Students of the Month - Industrial Arts
Lyn Magnuson was chosen by Mr. Nutini as the January Student of the Month. Lyn consistently demonstrates what it means to be a responsible and dedicated woodshop student. She comes to class prepared. listens to instructions, and puts in steady effort each day. Most importantly, Lyn takes shop safety seriously-following all procedures, using tools correctly, which sets a strong example for others. Her work habits, attention to detail, and respect for the learning environment make her a pleasure to have in class.
Mr. Jessen selected Carter LaCosse as the male Student of the Month. Carter is currently excelling in Vocational welding, Auto Repair, and Construction Trades at WHS. He is constantly courteous and is always willing to lend a hand. His willingness to work hard, and his focus on doing the job correctly the first time, will make him an asset to any industry.
Congratulations Lyn and Carter!

WHS Students Take the Stage at Project Soapbox Challenge
Students at Westwood High School will be competing at the School Level Project Soapbox Challenge on Thursday, February 19th in Westwood High School's Auditorium, hosted by English teachers Cara Anderson, Emily Arseneau, and Jacob Bonetti.
Project Soapbox is a Mikva Challenge program designed to help teens across the country develop communication skills including persuasive writing, public speaking, and issue research. These skills are critical to young people’s ability to 'get on a soapbox' and become advocates for, and find solutions, to issues affecting their communities. The mission is to develop youth to be informed, empowered, and active citizens and community leaders.
This program is being brought to Marquette County in honor of the late Tom Baldini. Mr. Baldini devoted his life to promoting civic activism, solving problems, and working to make his community a better place. The dual purpose of this Soapbox Challenge is to honor his legacy and to engage and empower the next generation of community activists.
Later, on February 26, students from across Marquette County will compete in the final round of the Tom Baldini Soapbox Showcase by delivering original speeches addressing what they believe are the most pressing issues facing society today. This unique and powerful event aims to shine a light on issues including mental health, environmental concerns, veteran care, as well as other societal ills.
