Dear George Walton Academy Community,
We are excited to share several personnel updates within the GWA leadership and admissions teams.
Kellie Watts Named as Assistant Head of School
We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Kellie Watts has agreed to serve as Assistant Head of School beginning in the 2025-26 school year. After a career as a professional engineering consultant, Kellie transitioned into education and has since become a respected leader within our community. She currently serves as Middle and Upper School Division Head and Academic Dean, where she mentors both students and faculty as a collaborative and innovative leader.
Kellie earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Georgia Tech, and her background as a mechanical engineer has shaped her creative problem-solving approach to education. She is known for her strong faith, servant’s heart, and caring and approachable demeanor, all of which have positively impacted GWA.
Kellie and her husband, RV Watts, Monroe Police Chief, have three children: Ethan, Grace (GWA Class of 2022), and Will, an 8th grader at GWA.
Reflecting on this new opportunity, Kellie shared:
"I am both humbled and grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the students, families, and faculty of our special school in this role. Since joining the GWA family, I have grown to love every aspect of GWA. Ensuring our students are confidently prepared for college and life beyond will continue to be my highest priority. I am prayerfully anticipating this next chapter and welcome your support and encouragement."
Admissions Department Updates
For the past 11 years, Mrs. Cari Bailey has been the welcoming face of George Walton Academy, guiding and supporting countless families as our Director of Admissions. We wish her the very best as she embarks on an exciting new opportunity in public relations at Piedmont Walton. Her dedication, warmth, and commitment have played an invaluable role in shaping our school community.
Reflecting on her time at GWA, Cari shared:
"I'm really going to miss all of the people that came through my office to get here over the years. I loved the school community before I started working here, which made my job a joy. There is so much to show off and to talk about. Although I will no longer hold a paid role with the school, I will forever be an ambassador and will remain involved as a parent and raving fan!"
As we prepare to bid a fond and grateful farewell to Cari Bailey, we are excited to announce that Lamonique Pierre has been promoted to Director of Admissions. Cari expressed confidence in this transition "Lamonique is, without question, 100% the right person for this leadership role."
Lamonique has been an integral part of the admissions team since 2020, serving as Admissions Associate. She brings a warm, welcoming presence to working with prospective families and is passionate about sharing what makes GWA so special. As a GWA parent of two young boys, basketball coach and active member of the school, she understands firsthand the value of a GWA education and is excited to foster strong connections with new and returning families.
"Admissions is the most fun and rewarding job on campus. Every day, I get to share what makes GWA special and help families find the right place for their children to grow and succeed," says Lamonique.
To complete our Admissions Team, Mrs. Jenna Johnson will return to the Advancement Team in March as Assistant Director of Admissions and Assistant to Head of School.
Jenna is a dedicated advocate for student success, with over 25 years of experience in private education. Highly organized and detail-oriented, she brings extensive expertise in admissions and recruitment. Her commitment to GWA is centered on attracting and recruiting exceptional students who will thrive in our rigorous academic environment. We are confident that Lamonique and Jenna will make an outstanding team in leading our admissions efforts.
Please join us in thanking Cari Bailey for her dedication and years of service, and welcoming Kellie Watts, Lamonique Pierre and Jenna Johnson to their important new positions.
John D. Marshall
Head of School
Alex Martin is STAR Student!
George Walton Academy senior Alex Martin has been named the school’s 2025 PAGE STAR Student. To qualify as the STAR Student a senior must have the highest SAT score at their school on any single test date through November of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent of their class based on grade point average. Alex selected Spanish teacher Jessie Croft as his STAR Teacher. Both Alex and Sra. Croft were honored at a banquet sponsored by the Walton County Chamber of Commerce at the Monroe Golf and Country Club.
Congratulations to Alex and Sra. Croft!
Beyond the Classroom
Last week, the eighth-grade class visited the Georgia State Capitol. The day began with the group being seated (and some standing -they were a large group!) in the House of Representatives Gallery. George Walton Academy was recognized from the House floor by Representative Tim Fleming. After the recognition, the group listened to other business on the House floor. Next, students enjoyed a Chick-fil-A lunch in a special room. Representatives Tim Fleming, Rey Martinez, Bruce Williamson, and Attorney General Chris Carr spoke with students. The group wrapped up the day with a tour of the fourth floor of the Capitol which included a history of sports in Georgia.
Real-World Skills
Our third-grade students kicked off their economics unit with a special field trip to the Chick-fil-A Corporate Campus! This hands-on experience introduced students to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship as they learned about business operations, innovation, and teamwork.
Through this engaging visit, students began to develop their entrepreneurial skills, and they will apply what they have learned by creating their very own businesses. These budding entrepreneurs will showcase their creativity and hard work during our highly anticipated Market Day later this semester.
We can’t wait to see the real-world skills our students will develop on this journey, and we are confident this experience will inspire them to think big, dream boldly, and innovate!
Quick reminder: your student's enrollment contract will renew automatically and updated tuition for 2025-26 will post to your FACTS account beginning next week. Please refer to the February 5 email from Jenni Cole and the Business Office regarding tuition and aid questions.
Speed Dating
Spanish Club (Té y Chisme) members got together to enjoy some heart-shaped cookies and “speed date.” They had to ask/answer (in Spanish) as many questions on the provided sheet as possible in one minute and then switch partners. Here are a few of the questions asked -
- ¿Cuál es tu postre favorito? (What’s your favorite dessert?)
- Describe una cita romántica (Describe a romantic date)
- ¿Te gustan más los perros o los gatos? (Do you like dogs or cats more?)
¡Feliz día del amor y la amistad!

Welcome Back!
A shout out to GWA alums, Justin Cohen and Chuma Atunzu, who recently called up GWA Director of Bands, Mr. Christian Smith, to visit their old band stomping grounds. They had a great visit and treated Mr. Smith to lunch. Mr. Smith said, “It was fantastic to see the guys - I was very appreciative and I'm so proud of the successful young men they have become! Such good people and so many great memories."
Chuma Atunzu – Class of 2014
As for music, I had a wonderful time and the privilege of playing both at Georgia State University, as well as the University of Georgia! I performed in both concert bands as well as the marching bands for each school. I loved the trips and time spent together, from the Macy’s Day Parade at GSU, to the several bowl games as a Redcoat! I’ll always cherish the memories and friendships that music has brought to me!
I’m now a senior software engineer at Asurion, and work from home and their HQ in Nashville. Asurion is a tech company that offers protection, repair, and support for devices and appliances. We work with major wireless carriers, retailers, pay-TV providers, etc. I do full stack development on multiple internal and customer facing apps that help keep the business going and growing!
Justin Cohen – Class of 2015
I am creative/art director at a tile, glass, and stone company called Glazzio! I handle all aspects of branding and visual collateral for print, web, and social.
I was in the marching band at Kennesaw State and marched with the World Champion Drum and Bugle, the Bluecoats for 4 years and toured the country performing and competing. In 2016, we won the DCI World Championship! I now work with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps as a visual instructor, and we just won our 2nd DCI World Championship this year! So, I'm still in the music game along with my career.
