Parent Engagement Survey
We want to hear from you!
All HCPS parents and guardians are encouraged to participate in the annual Harford County Public Schools Parent Engagement Survey. Your feedback via this survey is essential in helping us better understand how we can continue improving the school-home connection. Survey results guide us in identifying strategies that support strong family partnerships and student success across all HCPS schools.
Last spring, Parent Academy opened the 2024-25 survey. If you did not submit a response at the end of last school year, please consider participating now. The survey should take approximately 5–10 minutes to complete, and is reopened through October 19, 2025, at 11:45 p.m.
All responses are anonymous and confidential. We encourage those completing the survey to be as honest and open as possible.
The survey is also available in Spanish. To access it, change the language setting in the top right corner of the survey start page from "English (United States)" to "Español (España, alfabetización internacional)."

Curriculum Transparency: A Shared Commitment
Beginning this month, I will be writing a short memo in each newsletter on an issue I believe is important to families. This is my first one, and I’d like to start with a topic that goes to the core of our shared responsibility: what we teach our children.
Harford County Public Schools has always worked to make curriculum information available to families. Parents and guardians have been able to review instructional resources, see the scope and sequence of courses, and understand how classroom learning connects with Maryland’s state standards. This reflects a long-recognized principle in both law and practice that families have the right to shape their children’s education. Our responsibility as a school system is to reinforce families’ role in education through openness and transparency.
In recent years, we’ve taken steps to make that openness even more meaningful. Last year, we reinforced a commitment to Parent Teacher conferences, which continues this school year. Additionally, one of the most valuable steps for transparency has been the adoption of Canvas, which gives families real-time access to assignments, due dates, and course resources. Many of you already use Canvas every day, and we are working to provide even more support and training, so it continues to be a helpful window into classroom learning. Here are Canvas Access Instructions and don’t forget that you can set notification preferences, check weekly for updates, and message teachers directly in Canvas.
This fall, with Dr. Bulson’s leadership and the Board’s focus on transparency, we’ll be taking that progress even further. Families can expect easier online access to curriculum materials, plain-language summaries alongside state standards, and updated guides that outline what students are expected to learn at each grade level. These improvements will roll out later this school year. In the meantime, visit our instructional departments online for information about each subject, grade by grade.
A recent Supreme Court ruling has ignited discussion about families’ ability to review instructional materials, opt-out, and receive communication from their schools. In this moment, I want to highlight and reinforce our practices, which include access to Canvas and all posted materials in your students’ class, timely communication and notifications, and when needed, opt-out options.
For more information on staying connected to your student’s learning including opt-out, visit Stay Connected: Curriculum Options. As always, your child’s teacher is your first and best resource for questions about classroom instruction and state standards implementation. They know what’s happening in their classroom and can address most questions quickly.
At the end of the day, my commitment, and the commitment of our school system, is straightforward: families should always feel like full partners in their child’s education. Transparency builds trust, and trust helps students thrive. With new improvements beginning later this year and continued engagement, I’m confident we are moving forward together in the right direction.
With appreciation,
Dr. Aaron Poynton

HCPS Patriot Program
As we begin the 2025–2026 school year, we are excited to share that the HCPS Patriot Program will be part of the instructional day in all elementary schools across Harford County Public Schools.
The Patriot Program seeks to foster civic-minded students with knowledge of the rich history of the United States, an appreciation for the democratic values that are the foundation of our society, and an understanding of the ways they can responsibly participate in and contribute to their communities. Through engaging lessons and activities, students in Pre-K through Grade 5 will explore important values such as pride, responsibility, and respect.
Program Highlights:
- Official Launch: The program began on Constitution Day, September 17, with a day of special lessons and activities.
- Ongoing Learning: Throughout the year, students will explore nine areas of study, including civics, geography, history, art, music, physical education, media literacy, economics, and service learning.
- Home to School Connection: Families will receive a Patriot Pathways newsletter at the end of each unit, offering ways to continue the conversation and learning at home.
Additional Opportunities:
- While the Patriot Program will be taught during the school day for all students, PTAs may also offer “Beyond the Bell” Patriot activities as an optional, after-school program. They may also choose to sponsor activities or competitions alongside the Patriot Program to encourage students wanting to go above-and-beyond.
- Schools will have flexibility to create their own celebrations and activities to make the Patriot Program special for their community.
We are proud to expand this program to every elementary school. Thank you for your support as we launch this exciting new opportunity for our youngest learners!

Access the Playbooks here:
Both Playbooks are on hcps.org in English and Spanish under Parent Resources tab, https://www.hcps.org/parents/, and on school websites.

Trusted Path
As we continue to work together to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students, we’d like to remind families of the importance of having a trusted adult available after school – especially if a parent or guardian is not able to be present. Having a designated, reachable adult helps ensure your child’s safety and provides peace of mind for both families and staff.
Please take a moment as a family and complete the linked form as it is essential that your child knows who they can turn to for support and supervision. Thank you for your continued partnership.

2025-26 Magnet and Technical Programs Information
The CTE Office is pleased to announce dates for the 2025 Magnet Information Nights and Middle School Magnet Visits.
Magnet Information Nights are intended for current middle school families, particularly those with 8th graders, who may be interested in applying to Magnet Programs for the 2026-27 school year.
Middle School Magnet visits occur during the regular school day and provide another opportunity for 8th graders to engage with Magnet Specialists, gathering information and asking questions to inform their decision-making about high school academics.

Family Friendly School Award Program
Changes for the 2025-26 School Year!
We are excited to share an important update to our Family Friendly School Award program that will enhance the voting process in selecting our quarterly winner. Starting this school year, votes for nominated schools will now be calculated as a percentage of each school's total enrollment. The three schools with the highest percentage of votes will advance to the final round for the title of winner.
This small adjustment brings a significant improvement, ensuring that our smaller school communities have a fairer chance of reaching the top three each quarter. We believe this change will make the program more equitable for all.
The nomination window for the first quarter award is open NOW through midnight on Sunday, September 21, 2025. Nominate your school now: https://www.hcps.org/parents/parentacademy/familyfriendlyschools.aspx.
Then, the community can vote for a nominated school September 22-26. Be sure to follow the HCPS Parent Academy page on Facebook, where nomination and voting windows are announced each quarter.
We are excited to recognize and celebrate our 2025-26 Family Friendly Schools.
Parent Academy's Most Valuable Parent Award
One Award Recipient to be Named Each Quarter
Parent Academy is excited to continue our Most Valuable Parent (MVP) Award program this year. As a reminder, this award program recognizes and celebrates HCPS parents/guardians who actively support their child’s school by working to welcome ALL families, helping school staff communicate with ALL parents, building parents’ understanding of how to help their child successfully progress in school, finding community partners to help support the school, and working with administrators on decision making.
Our school's PACE Liaisons will nominate for this award. All nominations will be reviewed by the HCPS Customer Service Task Force External Subcommittee, and the subcommittee will select a winner each quarter of the school year.
Winners will be recognized on the HCPS website and social media accounts and will be presented with a certificate from Dr. Bulson and a small gift from Mary Beth Stapleton on behalf of Parent Academy. In addition, they will be interviewed and highlighted in a special video shared with the HCPS community.
We look forward to honoring and celebrating our awesome parents this school year!
