AP Biology
AP Biology students went on a field trip to Newport Bay to make observations of an estuarine ecosystem. Out on the water, students practiced their rowing skills, kayaking out into the bay on a docent-led tour of the local habitats of migratory birds. They looked at the negative influences of some human activities – pollution, eutrophication, over construction – on natural systems like this estuary.
Afterwards, another docent-led tour took them on a hike of the nearby shoreline. They explored the local riparian trails, collecting water samples along the way. Back at the aquatic center, students were able to conduct water quality tests, measuring the changes in pH and temperature, as well as nitrates and phosphates, over the course of the changing tides.
Aside from a fun-filled time kayaking and hiking at the bay, students were also able to incorporate what they have learned in science classes, build a deeper understanding of how our human impact has affected local ecosystems, and foster stronger motivations to help protect those fragile communities.

Students were tasked with building the tallest tower only using spaghetti sticks, tape and string. In addition, students must place a marshmallow on top. The Engineering Design Process is all about building a prototype, testing it out, and improving their design based on feedback. Most students failed on day 1.
