Greetings Gearity Families:

Please mark your calendar for Wednesday from 5:30 - 7:00 as we will be hosting our annual Family Math and Literacy Night. If you have not yet RSVP'd for the event please do so using this link: https://forms.gle/VvumqnR3FN5bn5dS6. We will be purchasing supplies and food for all attendees. A general idea of how many people will be attending can support our planning process.

We will also be having our Fall Book Fair all next week. We need to know how many parents are willing to supervise book fair time slots so we can have preview sessions for our students early in the week prior to them making purchases. You can volunteer using this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B044FABAB2CA3F85-59726895-book. If you would like to set up an ewallet so your child does not have to bring money to school you can do so with this link: https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/gearityprofessionaldeves1.

Chronic absenteeism! Thank you to everyone who has been monitoring their students absences as we saw a drop in the percentage of chronic absenteeism this week. Chronic absenteeism is based on the number of absences a student has had as a percent of the total time school has been in session since the first day of school. If a child misses several days but then attends regularly for an extended period of time their absent rate will improve. We were able to celebrate our students with perfect attendance as a part of the weekly attendance raffle. Every student is eligible if they are on time and present each day of the week. Make it a goal to have your children eligible for the next raffle.

Peek at the week!

Kindergarten:

Reading - Students practiced asking and answering questions about what they read and identifying important story elements like who is in the story, where it takes place, and what happens.

Math - Students practiced counting, comparing quantities, and solving basic addition/subtraction using objects, pictures, and numbers.

Parent tips for at home support: After reading a book together, ask questions like “Who was in the story?” or “What happened first?” Encourage your child to point to pictures to help them answer. Use small objects to solve quick addition/subtraction stories (ex: “You have 3 grapes. I give you 2 more—how many now?”).

Grade 1

Reading - Students are practicing how to talk about who is in the story, where it takes place, and what happens.

Math - Students are building confidence with number facts, story problems, and understanding how addition and subtraction work together.

Parent tips for at home support: After reading a story, ask your child: “Who were the characters?” “Where did the story happen?” “What happened first, next, and last?” Practice math facts within 10 in short bursts—make it a quick game or a race.

Grade 2

Reading - Students are strengthening skills in story structure, character understanding, and retelling with clear details.

Math - Students are building confidence with two-digit addition/subtraction and explaining their mathematical thinking.

Parent tips for at home support: When reading dialogue, have your child read as different characters to explore point of view. Practice adding and subtracting two-digit numbers using mental strategies (making tens, breaking apart numbers).

Grade 3

Reading - Students are learning how story structure supports comprehension and how to compare important elements between two texts.

Math - Students are strengthening multiplication/division fluency, recognizing number patterns, working with place value, and building area concepts.

Parent tips for at home support: Encourage your child to identify chapters or sections in a book and explain how they help organize the story. Look for patterns in numbers at home (skip counting, doubling, halves).

Grade 4

Reading - Students are practicing how to identify key details, determine main ideas, and recognize how informational texts are organized.

Math - Students are building accuracy with multi-digit multiplication and applying operations to solve real-world problems.

Parent tips for at home support: Ask your child to point to specific details in a text to support their answers (“What in the text made you think that?”). Practice multi-digit multiplication using everyday numbers (menu prices, sports stats, etc.).

Grade 5

Reading - Students are identifying main ideas, supporting details, and analyzing text structure in informational texts.

Math - Students are solving fraction problems accurately and applying fractions in practical situations.

Parent tips for at home support: Discuss how the text is structured (chronological, cause/effect, comparison). Ask your child to explain each step when adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing fractions.

PTA Needs You: Our next PTA meeting will be December 10th @ 6:30. I will share the Google meeting link when we return from Thanksgiving Break!
