Mr. Deane, our beloved head custodian, is in his eighteenth year (!) at Fourteenth Street School, which he cares for as lovingly as if it were his own home. Whether emptying trash, cleaning up spills, checking the boilers, vacuuming, shoveling, moving furniture around, performing light maintenance, or assisting in the cafeteria, Mr. Deane keeps the school looking good and ready for learning. And he is always happy to find jobs for students who want to help! When not at Fourteenth Street, Mr. Deane enjoys driving for Uber, hanging out with his cat, Fred, and visiting his children and grandchildren in his hometown of Woodstock, New Brunswick.

On December 23, Maine Mineral & Gem Museum Educational Outreach Coordinator Deb Johnson visited Fourteenth Street School, where she delivered a 30-50 minute presentation to each grade. Her program included an interactive reading of How the Meteorite Got to the Museum, the opportunity to hold an actual meteorite as well as to build a model of one, and, for students in grades 2-3, a slideshow about meteors and meteorites. The presentations were interesting and fun, especially for our budding meteoriticists (definitely a new word for me!). Many thanks to PTO Secretary Sam Hayes for bringing the work of the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum to our attention!

Every Friday we randomly select a prize winner (one per class) from among the students who received a RAMS award that week for being a responsible worker, acting respectfully, having a mighty positive attitude, and/or staying safe. Selected students get to choose a small toy; read to a class; help Mr. Deane in the hallways, Ms. McCorrison in the office, or Ms. Markee, Ms. Roth, or Ms. Robicheau in the kitchen; eat lunch with a friend; eat lunch with me; announce the weekly RAMS award winners; hang artwork with Ms. Caler, or select a book from the book vending machine. And sometimes, even the principal gets to be a RAMS award winner!

SmartSocial SmartSocial

The Bangor School Department is partnering with SmartSocial, a digital platform designed to help families and educators keep students safe online, through virtual events, a video library, and guides for apps. We encourage parents/guardians to explore the resources on this platform and to start conversations with your students regarding positive internet and social media use. https://www.smartsocial.com/login

Gentle Reminders Gentle Reminders

  • If you need to make a change to your student's after-school plan (from bus to pickup or vice versa), please let Ms. McCorrison know as early in the day as possible. Changes requested after 2:45 pm may not be able to be accommodated (although we will certainly try to do so).

  • As the weather gets colder, please make sure your student has a jacket or coat, gloves or mittens, and a hat to wear at school. Snow pants and boots are required to play in the snow. Also, crossing guards at the intersection of Fourteenth Street and Hammond Street and in front of the school are not guaranteed if the "feels like" temperature is below ten degrees.

  • On scheduled early release days (February 11, March 12, April 8, and May 13) or if Superintendent Robinson calls for an early dismissal due to weather, the school day will end at 11:55 am, at which time walkers will be dismissed. Students who ride Bus J or Bus H will be dropped off at their bus stops approximately three hours before their normal drop-off time.
