From the Principal's Desk:

Dear Salisbury Families:

Well, I will admit that this newsletter got away from me a little bit, but hopefully better late than never! I hope everyone is well, and enjoying the late foliage! Although the last week has been pretty dark, the foliage has been a bright spot for sure (pun intended, of course).

During this week the families of 4th and 5th graders will receive their children's scores for VTCAP, the new standardized test that is being used across Vermont to see, year to year, how Vermont students are doing. The scores this year are a little tough to really make a lot of meaning out of because the test has never been given before, so there is no previous evidence- no "baseline data" to compare this year's scores to. So we don't totally know how accurate VTCAP is. We should take it seriously, though, because it was made by a lot of really knowledgeable people who looked closely at state standards and common grade-level expectations. Very likely when changes are made to the test between this year and next (and I'm sure there will be changes, especially because it is new) they won't be huge and drastic ones.

Over the next few months we, as an entire school district, will be digging into district-wide data and school-based data. As we do, I will definitely write again in this space about what we are learning from the test results, and what we will be doing in the future to continue to help our student grow to be as strong as they can be!

Families of 4th and 5th graders, please reach out if you would like help understanding the VTCAP information you receive in the mail- the descriptive letter that goes with it is helpful, but may not explain all you would like to know.

Best,

Bjarki

Lions Daiper Drive! Drop-off at SCS

The Lions Club of Middlebury is having a diaper drive for the month of October. All diapers collected are going to the Addison County Parent-Child Center. The Middlebury Lions are doing this along with all 34 Lions Clubs throughout Vermont. The effort is to help offset the 70% reduction in funding to the Vermont Diaper Bank. The Diaper Bank exists to help provide diapers to economically challenged young families.

You may drop diaper donations off at Salisbury Community School, and we will transfer them to the Lions Club. We will weigh the diapers, and announce the total weight in a future newsletter. Then, next year, we'll try to beat that number!
