The application window for LCPS Distance Learning programs closes tomorrow, Friday, March 27. LCPS offers two fully synchronous virtual options for the 2026–2027 school year:

Virtual Distance Elementary (VDE) – for students in rising grades 1–5
Virtual Distance Learning (VDL) – for students in rising grades 6–12

Families must submit an application through ParentVUE for enrollment consideration. This is the only opportunity to request Distance Learning for the 2026/27 school year. Current VDE and VDL students must reapply if they wish to continue. Students who do not apply will remain enrolled in their in-person home school. Visit Distance Learning for program details, an informational video and how to apply.

The Special Permission application period is open. Special Permission allows families to request that their student attend a school outside of their assigned attendance zone. The Special Permission process is guided by Policy 8155, School Assignment, and its accompanying regulation. Policy 8155 establishes 85% of the building’s base capacity as the maximum student enrollment for considering Special Permission applications. Initial Special Permission applications submitted to schools that are at or above 85% of the building’s base capacity will be voided within 30 days of application. Review schools projected to be at or above 85% of the building’s base capacity on the Special Permission website. This list is subject to change. Once the application window closes on April 30 at 11:59 p.m., no additional Special Permission applications will be accepted. For more details and to apply, please visit the Special Permission webpage.

In a world where the professional landscape is constantly evolving, families and schools are working together to help students build the “human skills” that technology cannot replace. Skills like communication, collaboration, adaptability and self-awareness are essential not only for success in the classroom, but also for navigating future careers and contributing to a thriving community.

Through natural connections and intentional integration, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) provide students with authentic, real-world learning experiences that connect personal growth with career readiness. These experiences align with the division’s instructional framework by promoting critical thinking, reflection and meaningful application of skills across content areas. Together, SEL and CTE help students develop the confidence and competence needed for life beyond graduation.

During the week of March 2, schools across the division celebrated SEL Day, an internationally recognized opportunity to highlight the importance of social-emotional learning. This year’s theme, Skills for Community, Skills for Career, encouraged students to explore how self-awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making play a role in both everyday life and future career pathways.

Schools across LCPS brought this theme to life in engaging and meaningful ways. For example:

Buffalo Trail: Career Dress Up Day
Students explored career pathways while building identity, goal-setting and future readiness.
Henrietta Lacks Elementary: Wear Green to Represent Responsibility
A visible reminder that individual actions contribute to strong teams and communities.
Forest Grove Elementary: News Show Guests Sharing “Sparks & Challenges”
Students connected perseverance and self-awareness to real-world career journeys.
Sugarland Elementary: Family Relaxation Night
Families practiced wellness strategies together, reinforcing stress management and balance as lifelong skills.
Brambleton Middle School: Spirit Week, including College and Career Dress Up Day
Students engaged in schoolwide activities that connected belonging, identity and future aspirations.

These experiences not only strengthen school culture, but also help students see themselves as capable contributors to their communities and future workplaces.

Looking to continue the conversation at home? Try these career-focused conversation prompts with your child. For more ways to stay engaged, explore Spring Break activities on the LCPS Family SEL website.

Reflect and Connect: How do skills like self-awareness, responsibility and collaboration show up in your daily life and how might they help you succeed in a future career?
