"Encourage one another and build each other up ..."
1 Thessalonians 5:11
This week has been a great week of setting expectations for ourselves for the year. We are developing our routines, and although we have room to grow, we are really improving with our listening and direction following directions.
This week, we started a new Math unit, focusing on decimals. We learned how to use compatible numbers to estimate group numbers with mental math. Number sense plays a large role in overall math understanding, which can be tricky, so I encourage extra practice where needed. There are correlating "assignments" on IXL that feed off each lesson. While these are optional, I highly encourage the use of them for extra practice.
We started our Science unit this week, beginning with a chemistry lesson about creating potions. We learned that particles can be transferred through substances, even if we can't see it! We are continuing this lesson with a fun lesson on matter, reiterating the idea that even if we can't see it, it doesn't mean it's not there!
We also finished our STAR testing this week, and I will be using these to help guide my teaching over the year. You will be receiving the results of these at our conferences next month.
Book Fair
The school Book Fair is coming the week of September 22. The 5th grade class will be going to the Book Fair together on Tuesday, September 23. If you would like to send money with your child to purchase books, you can do so. You can also use this link to add to an e-wallet for your student.
If you would like to donate money to our classroom to help maintain and grow our classroom library, please use this link. Thank you!
SciTrek
You may have seen some pictures on Seesaw this week. We had visitors from SciTrek this week who ran us through our mini module for the fall. We learned about claims and conclusions, and the difference between types of variables in an experiment. Next month, we will be running our Shadows module. There is a letter in the Friday Folder on the "Return to School" side with more information, and a consent form. You can sign and return these in the folder. Thank you!
