Gratitude!

Dear Coupeville Families,

Welcome back from spring break! As we step into the final stretch of this school year, I am filled with gratitude for the students, families, staff, and community who make our district such a special place to learn and grow.

This has been a year of meaningful momentum and I want to take a moment to share some of what we have been building together.

Our students are thriving. We adopted new curriculum this year and the results are showing. Robotics, Biomedical Science, AP History and Elementary Reading and Writing! Teachers are energized, students are engaged, and we are seeing real growth in our classrooms every day. I hope you were able to witness our board meeting last month where curriculum highlights and presentations were shining.

Our schools are getting a transformational investment. I am proud to share that our district was awarded a $10 million grant for noise mitigation at our middle and high schools. This is a significant win for our students and staff, who deserve learning environments that support focus, communication, and well-being. Grant funding like this reduces the burden on local taxpayers while delivering upgrades our community can be proud of for decades to come.

None of this happens without our people. Our teachers, support staff, administrators, and school board show up every day with dedication and heart. I am grateful to work alongside them.

As we look ahead to the final weeks of the school year, and begin planning for an exciting year to come, know that every decision we make starts with one question: what is best for our students?

Thank you for trusting us with your children. It is the greatest responsibility we have, and we do not take it lightly.

With appreciation,

Shannon Leatherwood Superintendent

Calling All Juniors and Parents of Class 2027:

The junior class hosts prom every year for our seniors. It takes a team of people, both students and parents, to host this event off-campus, and we need YOUR HELP!

The student prom committee has already made some arrangements. We have our date-May 2, venue—OH Yacht Club, and DJ. We are working on securing a photographer and we have a theme “On the Bayou” reflecting the thematic colors and design elements from The Princess and the Frog.

Here is what we need help with from the parent group:

  • Coordination and donations toward the thematic refreshments
  • Decorations/prop building
  • Setup and transport crew
  • Cleanup and transport crew:
  • Chaperones and Supervisors of sophomore servers

Please contact Jackie Calkins-Saia at jsaia@coupeville.k12.wa.us as soon as possible if you can help!

April is National Volunteer Month… and around here, that’s kind of a big deal. 💙

Coupeville schools are filled with incredible people, but let’s be honest… we couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers. The ones who show up early, stay late, jump in wherever needed, and somehow always know exactly when a student needs a little extra encouragement.

You’re the extra set of hands, the extra bit of patience, and the extra heart that makes our schools feel like home.

Whether you’re reading with students, helping behind the scenes, cheering from the sidelines, or quietly making a difference in ways most people never see… we see you. And we are so grateful.

This month, and every month, thank you for being part of what makes Coupeville special!

CMS/CHS Teacher & Transitional Specialist (RISE Program)

This week, we are proud to recognize Melissa Casey, whose energy, compassion, and fierce advocacy make a powerful difference in the lives of students across Coupeville Middle School and High School.

Melissa is known for her vibrant personality and her unwavering commitment to putting students first.

She has a unique ability to meet students exactly where they are, supporting their growth both academically and personally.

“Melissa is a walking, talking masterclass in teaching.”

Her work with students, especially those navigating challenges, is rooted in empathy, patience, and respect. She consistently sees the potential in every student, even when others may struggle to.

“She has a way of seeing the good in everyone, especially the ones others might find difficult.”

Melissa’s colleagues admire not only her connection with students, but also her willingness to step in and support others at any moment.

“She is always, always willing to step up into whatever situation requires her support.” “Melissa is a dynamo who pitches in wherever and whenever students need her.”

Her impact extends beyond the classroom through collaboration, leadership, and her commitment to building systems that truly serve students.

“She puts students first rather than programs.”

Despite managing a large caseload, Melissa maintains a consistent level of care, positivity, and energy that inspires those around her.

“She balances it all with compassion and energy. She is truly a gift.”

And of course, there is one detail that many can’t help but mention:

“If you say a word that’s in a song, she will start singing!”

Through humor, heart, and relentless dedication, Melissa creates an environment where students feel supported, valued, and capable of success.

Coupeville School District is incredibly fortunate to have Melissa as part of our team.

Thank you, Melissa, for your passion, your advocacy, and the difference you make every single day!
