The Sheiko Weekly Update
Sheiko Elementary: February 27, 2026
PRINCIPAL UPDATE
Dear Sheiko Families,
Thank you for all that you do! This week, I wanted to give you some important information about helping your student at home.
Parents often ask how they can help their child continue to grow—especially when it comes to NWEA. One of the best ways to support progress is through consistent practice. We recommend that students spend 20–30 minutes each week practicing both reading and math skills (aligned to NWEA goals) at home using IXL. You can find more information and access details here: https://www.wbsd.org/parents/ixl
One of my favorite success stories is about a 5th grader who committed to mastering two skills every single day! From September to January, she grew her RIT score by 10 points and moved from the 92nd percentile to the 97th percentile! Her intrinsic motivation is inspiring and shows what steady effort can accomplish.
In addition to skill practice, we want our students to read, read, and read some more!
This week’s “Big Announcement” is our school-wide reading of Frindle by Andrew Clements. We hope your student(s) and family will join us for our live Zoom readings on March 2–6 and March 9–10. We read the first chapter today!
It is helpful to check the book out from the library or purchase a copy so your child can follow along each evening. We will use the same Zoom link every night:

Thank you for all you do to support your child’s growth and love of learning!

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
It has come to our attention that there are group messages occurring among many 5th grade students. Other grades have lots of "chatting" going on during video games that is becoming very hurtful and spilling over into school friendships. Here are other resources as well: https://www.commonsense.org/education/family-resources
Thank you for partnering with us to keep everyone safe online!
Digital citizenship is a great topic to talk about at home. Here is one resource from Common Sense Media:
