Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Golden Hill
Partners in the State Coastal Conservancy's "Community Wetland Recovery" celebrated a jubilant kickoff on October 14th. The initiative began with 32nd Street Canyon Task Force and San Diego Coastkeeper's commitment to restore functionality to needy riparian areas with help from neighbors, students, and volunteers.
Golden Hill Elementary principal Dr. Julia Martinez welcomed a crowd just 30 feet from 32nd Street Canyon's Chollas Creek tributary. San Diego Unified School District board president Richard Barrera then greeted students, parents, teachers, and neighbors, before joining elementary school students to cut the ribbon and officially open the garden. A queue of students carrying native wetland plants filed in, after which teacher Anne Wedemeyer spoke enthusiastically about students' excitement for the teaching garden and nearby canyon. Science instruction is in Spanish at the dual-language campus.
Conservancy project manager Kellan Warner emphasized the importance of protecting and restoring Southern California's coastal resources. Professor Rachel Russell, who launched GIS MapForce, expressed her hope of seeing the students at Mesa College in the future. San Diego's "father of wetland recovery," Jim Peugh, told students they would find beneficial surprises and perhaps a life purpose in the canyon. Regional Water Quality Control Board scientist Hiram Sarabia highlighted the exciting role of science in wetlands, marine ecosystems, and water quality.
Everyone had a "paleta" (popsicle) and everyone committed to Grow Clean Water!
Halloween Parade
Join us on Friday, October 30th for our annual Halloween Parade at 9:40 am. Remember that we have our younger students who might be fearful of very scary costumes. Please be mindful of scary costumes, not wearing masks (need to see faces), and not bringing fake weapons to school. We hope to have a very fun and safe Halloween Parade

San Diego Unified Phone Free District
Here at Golden Hill we had implemented a phone free policy as early as last year because we understand how phones can disrupt the learning environment. We are pleased that our district recently adopted a phone-free school day policy, developed in accordance with California's Phone-Free School Act (Assembly Bill 3216), which establishes guidelines designed to reduce interruptions to learning, foster in-person connection among peers and support healthy boundaries with technology. The state law requires all public school districts to adopt policies by July 1, 2026, making San Diego Unified an early adopter.
Please see the attached letter that will also be sent to families through our unified communications.
