MS 50 is excited to join schools city-wide for NYCPS Respect for All Week! Renamed Kindness Week by our students, Respect for All Week (Feb 9-13) is a time for MS 50 to actively promote a community of inclusion, respect for diversity, and a school culture where students lead with kindness. All Kindness Week activities are created and facilitated by students, and include a teacher gratitude talk, an 8th grade advice panel, a DIY dap tutorial, and the creation of a peace and justice video. Students have been planning all month and are excited to launch Kindness Week 2026!

Our Spring ELTs are starting this week! The new classes that we are adding are:

Jazz Band (now Tuesdays and Wednesdays)
Yearbook (Tuesdays)
Fashion History (Wednesdays)
Beekeeping (Thursdays)
Rock Band (Thursday)
Economics and You/Shark Tank (Thursdays)

Please speak to Mr. Honoroff, Ms. Gunn, or Mr. Warren during lunch or after school if you would like to add or drop any courses.

6th Grade -Weather and Climate

In 6th grade science, students are learning about weather and climate and the factors that influence them. They are exploring how weather describes day-to-day conditions, while climate refers to long-term patterns in a region. Students are investigating how temperature, air pressure, wind, latitude, elevation, and proximity to oceans affect weather and climate around the world. Through data analysis, models, and real-world examples, students are developing skills to observe patterns, interpret graphs, and explain how scientists study and predict weather and climate changes.

7th Grade - Cells and Body Systems

In this unit, students will explore the fundamentals of cell theory and learn how to use microscopes to examine various slides for the NYS Mandated Alive lab. They will gather evidence supporting the idea that all living things are made of cells. Students will also study and draw cellular organelles, learning about their structure and functions, and will compare animal and plant cells. Additionally, the unit includes a body systems module, where students will dive into the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems. To understand how these systems work together, students will first focus on learning about each system and its parts in detail through several lessons.

8th Grade - Humans versus Bacteria

Our 8th graders just completed an exciting, hands-on DNA extraction lab in which they isolated real DNA from strawberries using household materials! Students learned how scientists break open cells to access genetic material and discussed real-world applications like forensic science and medical research.

This week, we're diving into the fascinating world of the human microbiome—the trillions of bacteria living in and on our bodies. Students are discovering that most bacteria are helpful rather than harmful, and they're exploring how these microscopic organisms cooperate and compete to keep us healthy. We're examining topics such as antibiotic resistance and the important role of beneficial bacteria in digestion, immunity, and overall wellness.

We are very excited to announce that MS 50 is receiving a Cafeteria Enhancement this month! This project will bring updated food options to our kitchen, served in a "grab and go" style so that students have more options to choose from every day. The updates will also extend to the entire cafeteria space with updated seating including booths and more seating. The project is projected to be finished in the next few weeks and we can't wait to share photos of it with you once it is complete! Check out the attachment below for a sneak peak at what our updated menus will look like once the project is completed next month.
