Message from Mrs. Safer in Music
We’re having lots of fun exploring music, movement and instruments in the music room! Younger students are learning about fast and slow in music. We have had some animals in the music room to teach us about tempo: tortoises, cats, dogs and elephants. We’ve also gotten to know a bird named Mother Goonie Bird who has seven chicks, a rabbit named John who eats the vegetables in my garden, and a sleepy, grumpy grizzly bear.
Second graders have done a fabulous job learning a variety of folk songs and a fun folk dance called Alabama Gal. They’ve played percussion instruments as an ensemble and improvised rhythm patterns with those instruments. They are learning how pitch and rhythm together make songs, and they’re making wonderful progress on more difficult musical tasks!
Meanwhile, third graders have begun playing recorders. It has been so much fun to see their excitement and progress! Playing an instrument has helped them read music notation, learn proper instrument technique, and develop strategies for practicing an instrument and working independently. I look forward to seeing how many belts our students earn in our Recorder Karate book!

Message from the Hiawatha Preschool
For the next two weeks before break, to go along with our Communities Unit, PreK will be collecting food items to donate to the Heavenly Food Pantry. We've been learning about ways to help in a community, and thought this would be a nice connection to helping our own community in Essex Junction. The food pantry collects non-perishable food items; here is a list of items they are particularly in need of right now. Items can be dropped off in the classroom. Thanks for considering making a donation! :)
Message from our PTO
Hello Hiawatha Families! We've reached 100 days of school and this year, as well as our PTO events are just flying by!
Join us on Tuesday, February 11th at 6 PM for our next PTO meeting! We need new voices and ideas and would love to see you there.
Thanks to everyone who donated to the Classroom Wish Lists, your generosity was incredible!
Don't forget, our SPRING DANCE is right around the corner. If you haven't already, check out our sign up, we could still use some volunteers. Thank you!
