Good Afternoon FLAMS Families -

I hope you are enjoying our fall weather that has finally arrived! Take time this long weekend to sit down with your son or daughter to review their progress so far this year. With only two weeks left of quarter one students will want to make sure they are caught up with their work and developing strong habits around the completion of their assignments and organization.

Below are a few quick updates to keep you informed:

  • 2025-26 MCA (Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments) results and fall FAST reading and math reports have been compiled and are on their way home through your child’s English course. These assessments are an important tool for staff to determine areas of additional academic support for our students and to highlight those areas that we are finding accelerated growth and skills/benchmarks that require our increased attention. If you have any questions, please contact your student’s school counselor directly. We look forward to working with our families and students as we strive to offer an outstanding education for all of our learners.

  • #Bell2BellNoCell - Our students are doing a great job keeping cell phones and headphones/buds away from 7:30-2:13. Feedback has been positive from students engaging with one another. It’s clear that limiting distractions has created a more productive learning environment for everyone. Our work to maintain these expectations and routine will be on-going and will need to be supported by all.

  • After School Expectations - All students should be on their way home from school by 2:30 PM unless they are here working with a teacher or a participant in an activity, sport, or club. Students who desire to stay late to watch a friend in a basketball or volleyball game will need to still head home before returning with a parent or guardian. Please check out our activities website for information clubs and activities that your student may be interested in joining!

  • Absences and early pick up notifications should be submitted through ParentVue or by calling our Attendance line 651-982-3012 and leaving a message. Last minute notifications may result in longer waits while we send a leave pass to your child to be released from class.

As always, have a wonderful weekend!

A Note on Fidgets

We have recently seen a proliferation of students carrying a variety of items to school under a vague banner of a “fidget”. While some may be appropriate, many are simply toys that cause distraction in class and actually decrease performance and focus. Fidgets are most effective when treated as sensory tools, with guidelines, such as being unobtrusive and quiet. Certain items, such as fidget spinners, require visual attention and can be distracting for the user.

A few guidelines to keep in mind are:

  • Eyes on the Work: The fidget must be used without the student looking at it.

  • Keep it Quiet: The tool should not make a clicking or snapping sound.

  • Hands-Only: Tools should stay on the lap or under the desk, not tossed or shared.

Below are some examples of appropriate finger sized fidget tools for school. Questions or clarification you or your child have should be directed towards our counseling team.

Boys and Girls Middle School Wrestling

6th - 8th Grade Wrestling - Your son or daughter is invited to become part of an elite group. For many of your children, wrestling can be the perfect way to train their bodies and mind for the other sports they may participate in. For those that are looking to find their niche, wrestling can provide them with many assets that cannot be taught in the classroom. Benefits of joining wrestling include camaraderie, leadership skills, discipline, work ethic, improved fitness, mental toughness, and confidence. Come be a part of the Forest Lake Wrestling Program as we start Middle School Wrestling Practice on November 2nd at 2:45 in the Forest Lake High School Wrestling room. We will have a parent meeting sometime that first or second week as well.

You can register by going to the Forest Lake Schools Activity website or through your Parentvue account.

Bus Passes

Single day student bus passes to ride home with a friend or to another location are not available at this time while the transportation department assesses bus capacity. We will update parents and students should bus passes be reinstated. Please plan accordingly if your student needs alternate transportation.

If you need to make a long term transportation change to an alternate location (including families that need bussing to two separate households), please complete the Change in Student Pick Up/ Take Home form and return it to rpeterson@flaschools.org. These changes can take up to two weeks to go into affect.

Absences, Appointments, and Early Pickup Process

If your child is going to be absent, will be late due to a scheduled appointment, or if you will be picking up your child early, please enter this absence in the "report absence" section of the ParentVue app. If you are picking your child up early, leave a note with the reason for pick up and the time you will be arriving in the notes section and we will send a pass to your child to leave class 5 minutes ahead of that time. They will be watching for you to arrive in the parent pick up lane at door 1 at the requested time. You do NOT need to come inside for an early pick up or to drop off your student late. If you do need to come in, you will be asked to wait in the vestibule for your child to arrive.

Please do not email teachers or staff directly about early pick ups as, during a busy school day, these may not be seen right away. Entering it in the app also ensures that your child's excused absences and tardies are correctly recorded.

Attendance Matters

There is clear evidence of the correlation between a students’ attendance to school and their academic performance and positive behavior. At Forest Lake Area Middle School we value each of our students and have an amazing team to support them while here. We wish to team together with families to resolve attendance issues or concerns. Please take a moment to review the attached handout for middle school and high school families on the importance of attendance.

To report an absence or early pick up, please enter in the ParentVue app (for early pickup list the time in the note section) or call our attendance hotline:

Our school offers healthy meals each day. Starting school year 2023-24, we are joining Minnesota’s Free School Meals Program. All students can get one breakfast and one lunch free of charge each day at school. Although no application is required to receive this free meal benefit, filling out the Application for Educational Benefits is still important! Your child(ren) may qualify for other benefits like reduced fees at school. Your application may also help the school qualify for education funds, discounts, and other meal programs.
