A Message from the Principals for the Day, Mr. Jack, Miss Madison, and Miss Alison
Dear St. Mary’s Families,
You all sounded so wonderful at the Spring Concert. You all worked so hard learning your songs and were brave for performing in front of so many people. We would like to thank Ms. Tigges and Mr. Lynch for helping us learn all of our songs for the concert. We love being in your class. Thank you parents for taking time out of your day to attend our concert, we appreciate you for coming to see us.
Remember, Field Day is on Monday at Larz Anderson Park, and it starts at 10 am. Please remember what color you are wearing for your grade, PreK-8. Be sure to bring a hat, disposable lunch, snack and water bottle. You may wear sunglasses if you want to. Don’t forget to pick up your child at 1 pm.

8th Grade Graduates
Lucy
Lucy’s favorite memories at St. Mary’s are making skits for classes and being on the girls' basketball team. Lucy is so proud to be a part of the 2024-2025 undefeated girls' basketball season!! Lucy joined St. Mary’s in seventh grade. Lucy said that she will miss the school community, the environment here, and being in Miss Falcone’s homeroom the most when she moves on to high school. As she moves on to her next journey, Lucy is excited about making new friends, but is nervous about the amount of work she will have as a high school student. At this point, she is unsure if she will sign up for sports or a club, but if something catches her eye, she might give it a try! Lucy’s advice to incoming middle school students is to “Enjoy the present moment!” Lucy, you will be greatly missed at St. Mary's, and we can't wait to see how you will continue to learn, grow, and spread joy!
Mark
Mark’s favorite memory at St. Mary’s is the recent New York City trip for the middle school, and how much fun he had while there and being on the bus with his friends. Mark joined St. Mary’s this past year and says that he will most miss the friends that he has made at school. When asked what he is most proud of this year, Mark replied, “My projects in Latin, maturing, and becoming a more responsible student.” If he had to describe his experience at St. Mary’s this year in three words, Mark chose, “Fun, joy, and learning.” Although he is sad to be leaving St. Mary’s, Mark said he is excited to start at Xaverian Brothers High School next year. Mark said that he is not nervous about his new chapter, but is excited to learn at his new school, join the baseball team, and his goal is “To be my best self at Xaverian!” Mark’s parting wisdom to the incoming middle schoolers at St. Mary’s is “Do not be afraid to ask for help.” Mark, we are going to miss seeing you here at St. Mary’s, and we are excited to see how much you will grow and learn at Xaverian!
Anton
Anton came to St. Mary’s in sixth grade. If he had to describe his experience these past three years in three words, Anton chose, “Welcoming, Friends, Growth.” His three years at St. Mary’s have been very memorable! He says that he has noticed that he has matured a lot since he first arrived, and academically, has become a stronger student, especially in Math. Anton said that in sixth grade, he was “Unsure about Math, and has improved so much since then.” In addition to his academic strengths, Anton’s most memorable moments are the fun and unexpected times during class or at recess that “made for funny moments that broke up the day.” Anton said that he will miss the St. Mary’s community, the teachers, and his friends. Anton will be heading to Boston University Academy next year. He is nervous about high school, the workload, the overall environment, pressure, doing well, and the teachers. However, he is also excited to “find time for things at BUA that interest me at school, and to join interesting clubs and play tennis.” He is looking forward to having “Good teachers and nice classmates.” Anton’s parting words of wisdom to incoming middle school students are, “To try your best and be welcoming and kind, don’t be stressed out, don’t be pressured. Be Yourself!” Anton, we are going to miss seeing you here at St. Mary’s, and we are excited to see how much you will grow and learn at BUA!
Middle School Guest Speaker
This week, Dr. Fiona Elwood, Vice President in Neurodegeneration at Johnson & Johnson and parent of two St. Mary's students, came to speak to our middle schoolers. In her role at J&J, Dr. Elwood works on drug research to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. During the presentation, students got to see a 3D printed model of a brain of a real patient with Alzheimer's that showed the progression of the disease over three years. They learned that the brain uses about 20% of the body's energy. Using the information presented by Dr. Elwood, students were challenged to "discover and develop a drug for a neurodegenerative disease," choosing between Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS. They took their information through four steps:
1. Choose a disease to work on
2. Choose a drug target
3. Choose a drug
4. Choose a clinical development plan
Going through this process allowed students to understand the time, money, and effort that goes into researching drugs for neurodegenerative diseases. We are grateful to Dr. Elwood for share her amazing work with our middle school students!
Middle School Play: Snow White and the Seven Endings
This week, middle school presented the play they have been working on in Drama class this year!
In Snow White and the Seven Endings by Tracy Wells, happily-ever-after gets turned on its head in this comedic retelling of Snow White’s classic princess fairy tale. When the seven dwarfs reminisce about their recent run-in with a royal run-away, they each have a different take on how the story unfolds and who the real hero is. But which is the real ending? The only thing they agree about is that the Prince shouldn’t get the credit!
Each of the seven dwarfs takes their turn sharing their recollection of what happened to Snow White once she came to their cottage. Which one will be your favorite? The hilarious slapstick comedy, the moody melodrama, the poetic Shakespearean retelling, the intriguing mystery, the lively interpretive dance, or the thrilling action-adventure?
Students demonstrated a deep understanding of their characters, and the work they put into conveying the different genres of each ending was clear. We are so impressed by our students comedic timing, emotion, vocal projection, and dedication to the performance! Great job, middle school!
A Message from the Gardening and Eco Clubs
Gardening and Eco Clubs collaborated on Thursday afternoon to learn about composting. An environmental engineer, Miss Fiona, who works with the city of Brookline, came and visited the clubs, teaching the students about composting and how it can be beneficial to our community. They watched a video from Black Earth on how to make compost. Students were able to decorate their own composting bins to take home and utilize with their families!
A cool organization called Black Earth Compost offers free composting services to Brookline residents. There is a drop off site at the Teen Center, which happens to be right next to St. Mary's! If you and your student are interested, find more information through the link below.
Spring Concert
Feast of the Ascension
On Thursday, grades PreK-8 attended Mass for the Feast of the Ascension, which commemorates Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. Father David celebrated the Mass and helped us imagine what it was like to be the disciples when Jesus was speaking to them and ascending into Heaven during his homily. Principal for a Day Jack and Vibha lectored, and Grace led the Prayers of the Faithful.
