GET TO KNOW CARLA CONTLA

Coming from the CARE Clinic where she helped people schedule appointments or handle insurance, Carla Contla today works directly with young people attending Red Wing Public Schools. As the cultural liaison, she spends time at Colvill Family Center, Twin Bluff Middle School, Red Wing High School and Tower View Alternative High School as well as helping online students.

“When students tell me their story, I love to hear their experiences,” the RWHS 2021 graduate said.

Reflections on Hispanic Heritage Month

Please describe your work. What does a typical day look like?

Every day looks different, that’s what I like the most, I usually start the day checking emails and, if I have a meeting, I get ready for it. I help students if they need it.

In addition, I translate documents from English to Spanish for the district and, when bad weather results in school closures, I record the Spanish portion of the “snow day” phone and email message.

What is your favorite part of the job?

My favorite part is that I can talk with the students, and I get to know them. They are very funny and I really enjoy talking with them.

How do you spend your free time outside of school?

I like to explore new places, try new food. I have a son. He is 2 years old, so I love to show him the world/ He keeps me very busy every day.

What can you cook to perfection? Are you willing to share the recipe?

I love to cook, I usually cook Mexican food. My favorite dish is chilaquiles. Very easy to make: It’s basically salsa with chips, topped with queso fresco and sour cream. You can also add protein like chicken, steak or eggs.

The salsa could be red or green. I love green salsa and this is how I make it: You are going to need 5 tomatillos and 2-3 jalapeños, it depends how spicy you want it.

  1. Boiled tomatillos and jalapeños

  2. Add the boiled tomatillos and jalapeño peppers to your blender, along with the onion and a clove of garlic.

And salsa is READY!!

RWPS this summer received a grant of $40,000 from aiEDU, a national non-profit focused AI Readiness in K-12. aiEDU was on site on Aug. 21 to work closely with a select number of high school staff who will serve a peer mentors. On Oct. 27, aiEDU will be back to deliver professional learning to all secondary staff.

The aiEDU grant is the launchpad for the broader strategy envisioned in the district’s Flight Plan 2030, a multi-year initiative to ensure that Wingers graduate digitally fluent, ethically grounded, and workforce-ready.
