Red Ribbon Week and Halloween Need to Knows
Good Morning Mav Nation,
It's hard to believe we have made it to the last week of October. As we returned from Fall Break, I held a school wide meeting during Homeroom on Wednesday. As the students begin a new grading period, we need to make sure they start the 2nd 9 weeks off right. Below my letter are the topics I discussed with the students. If you can be reinforcing the same message, I know our Mavs will be successful.
The campus is excited to kickoff Red Ribbon Week. Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America.
Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. This years Red Ribbon Theme is "Life is a Puzzle, Solve it Drug Free". Along with dress up days, Student Council will be spearheading campus wide activities for students and staff.
With Red Ribbon Week ending on Halloween, we wanted to incorporate costumes with the theme. Students wearing costumes to school need to follow the guidelines specified below. We want student to have fun but we also must maintain a safe learning environment for students.
The week will end with a Glow in the Dark Pep Rally. This will be the only Pep Rally that students must pay to attend. Students will receive several Glow in the Dark spirit items but tickets will be limited to 1000 students.
Backpacks will NOT be permitted on campus on Friday, 10/31. This is to ensure we maintain a safe learning environment. While we want students to enjoy the day, we are not naive that Halloween can bring more tricks than treats. If students violate the student code of conduct, they will receive consequences appropriate for the action. We are aware that Friday is a Game day and many athletes, band, cheer and dance will need to bring their equipment for the day. Athletes will be REQURIED to enter the campus through the athletic wing and all bags and equipment will be placed in the locker room before 1st period.
Band and Dance will communicate their large bag and equipment drop off plan directly to their students.
Thank you as always for your partnership and understanding as we ensure a fun and safe week for our Mavericks.

Beginning with the 2025–26 school year, parents must complete two forms in the Skyward Parent Portal:
- Health Notice and Consent Form
- Counseling Notice and Consent Form
Forms will be available beginning August 30, 2025, and must be submitted by September 12, 2025.
Please note: While parental consent is required for health and mental health services, certain legally required activities—such as behavioral threat assessments—require parental notification but do not allow an opt-out option under the law.
Senate Bill 12: Parental Consent for Club Participation
During the 89th Legislative Session, Senate Bill 12 was passed, requiring school districts to inform parents and guardians of their rights and to seek parental consent for students to participate in clubs.
Per SB 12: A school district or open-enrollment charter school must require the written consent of the parent of or person standing in parental relation to a student enrolled in the district or school before the student may participate in a student club.
Below is the Consent Form that must be completed for students to participate in clubs on campus.

Unlike underclassmen pictures, every senior has the opportunity to take a selection of senior photos. CADY offers a variety of sessions but all seniors must sign-up for a session to ensure your picture is included in the Yearbook and in the slideshow that is shown before graduation.
If you do not want to complete a full photoshoot with CADY, at the bottom of "Choose Sessions", there is a yearbook only session for $10. The $10 sitting fee is a fundraiser for the senior class and is used to help lower the cost for the senior trip, prom, etc.
Don't want to go to the CADY Studio, No worries! There will be 4 Senior Roadshows were the studio will come to MHS. You still must BOOK the session online. This is a great option if you only want the Standard ($59), Simple ($29) or Yearbook Only ($10) session.

2025 Varsity Football Schedule
As we look ahead to a successful 2025-26 school year, we want to make you aware of a new state law, House Bill 1481, which was passed by the Texas Legislature. House Bill 1481 prohibits students from using personal communication devices during the school day.
This law applies to:
- Cell phones
- Smartwatches
- Earbuds and headphones
- Tablets or any device that can text, call, record, or access the internet
In Alvin ISD, the expectation is simple: Not Seen. Not Heard. Not Taken.
Students may bring phones and personal electronic devices to school.
However, from the moment students enter the building in the morning until the final dismissal bell cell phones must be powered off or silenced, stored in a backpack or locker, and not used during class, passing periods, lunch, or restroom breaks.
Use in the Hallways
The use of personal communication devices in prohibited at all times.
Use at Lunch
Lunch is considered part of the school day so the use of electronic devices is prohibited under Texas Law.
Emergency Situations
Administrators may approve the use of cell phones in emergency situations where the device is necessary for the health or safety of students or others.
The Texas law requires school districts to administer disciplinary consequences if students violate the personal communication device policy in schools. Each infraction of this policy will result in the following escalating consequences:
- First offense – Device taken, returned to student
- Second – Parent must pick up
- Third – $15 fine + parent pickup
Refusal to hand over a device = disciplinary action per the Student Code of Conduct
Why this matters:
This law supports focused classrooms, respectful spaces, and safe learning for all.
Parents:
Please talk with your child about expectations before school starts. For emergencies, contact the campus office.
