A Note from the President

Fall is here which means so are many upcoming KCMTA events! I hope you will join us at 1:30 pm this Sunday, October 4th at Kansas City Piano for a wonderful masterclass with our 2026 Master Lesson clinician, Dr. Catharine Lysinger. This will be a chance to hear some new insights on pieces as well as catch up with members.

Next up will be Fall Festival: Celebrating the Music of the Romantic Era – October 17th-18th at the Bell Cultural Events Center at Mid-America Nazarene University. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Grace Chang, VP-Fall Festival at kcmtafallfest@gmail.com.

I have learned a great deal through the MTNA Associates’ Leadership Summit as well as renewing and making new connections at the recent KMTA State Conference in Wichita. I am excited to share some of these ideas with you over the course of the year. Thank you so much for your continued support as we continue to guide KCMTA into the future. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me (kcmtapres@gmail.com).

Unlocking South American Rhythms in Piano Repertoire

Joint Workshop with Federated Music Teachers of Kansas City

Tuesday, November 10th

10:00 AM

Kansas City Piano

7316 W. 119th St., Overland Park, KS

This session explores the vibrant rhythmic foundations of South American piano music, focusing on styles from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, and Colombia. The presenters, originally from Bolivia and Colombia, bring firsthand cultural and musical insight to the discussion. Attendees will gain tools to decode complex syncopations, clave patterns, and native grooves that define composers like Ginastera, Villa-Lobos, and others. Through live demonstrations, guided listening, and analysis of musical examples, observers will learn how to internalize these rhythms, preparing them to both teach and perform them more authentically.
