What is Imagine Illustrative Math?
Imagine IM is a problem-based core curriculum designed to address content and practice standards to foster learning for all. Students learn by doing math, solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts, and constructing arguments using precise language. Teachers can shift their instruction and facilitate student learning with high-leverage routines to guide learners to understand and make connections between concepts and procedures.

Math Grading in the Upper Grades....How does it Work?
Hello 4th & 5th grade families.
We are reaching out to you to share additional information about how your child will be graded this year with our new math curriculum, Illustrative Mathematics (IM). As we previously shared at Curriculum Night, this program is aligned with Common Core State Standards-based grading (i.e., 1, 2, 3, 4), which is documented on the District #41 report cards. The IM instruction and design provides a coherent progression of learning within and across grade levels. Depending on the grade, unit, and lesson, students engage with the standards at various levels: explore, play, and discuss; deep dive; or synthesize and apply. Additionally, the lessons are prioritized (i.e., high, medium, and low). This approach aligns with reporting learning standards with an understanding that students are moving toward a progression of proficiency.
District 41 is in the process of moving toward a standards-based grading system that focuses on priority standards to support this type of learning. In the meantime, traditional achievement grades (e.g., A, B, C, etc.) will continue to be reported until this transition is completed. For this reason, as math teachers we have collaborated with an IM consultant to identify how we can report your child’s achievement grade, utilizing this standards-based program. Below is the breakdown and explanation for our process for this school year.
Practice (25% of overall achievement grade): This will be a completion credit grade for the lesson “Cool Down” activity, which is typically 1-3 points. Please understand that this achievement grade will not reflect achievement toward performance; credit will be given for work completed. Therefore, students should be receiving 100% credit in this category for the achievement grade.
Quizzes (35% of overall achievement grade): Within each unit of study, there are sections which include “Checkpoints.” These Checkpoints will be used for this achievement grade category. These Checkpoints typically contain 1-3 questions.
Tests (40% of overall achievement grade): Following each unit is an “End-of-Unit Assessment.” These assessments have more questions, however, typically fewer than 10. These will be used for this achievement grade category.

We are excited to invite you to an upcoming session where we will discuss our district's review of the Illinois Literacy Plan and its key components. This plan plays a crucial role in shaping literacy instruction across all grade levels, and your participation as stakeholders is invaluable to ensure we align our strategies with the needs of our students and educators. During this meeting, we will explore the core elements of the plan, including instructional practices, assessments, and resources that support literacy development. We hope you can join us in this important conversation as we work together to enhance literacy outcomes in our district.
