Safety at Green Meadow Safety at Green Meadow

This week we held our second fire drill of the year, and our students did an excellent job exiting the building quickly and safely. We will conduct two additional fire drills later this year in collaboration with the Maynard Fire Department.

On Friday morning, all of our bus riders also participated in a bus evacuation drill. Each bus driver reviewed safety protocols with students, and Green Meadow staff supported the evacuation practice. The children did a fantastic job!

In both scenarios, the most important message we share with students is the importance of listening to adults and following directions to stay safe. Families can support our work by reinforcing this message at home.

This week Superintendent Haas has stopped by to read to classes in Grades 1 - 3. The students had lots of great questions for him and they have enjoyed the books that he has been reading. They have also been updating him on the construction process they have been observing out their classroom windows. So far the project continues to be on schedule.

Mrs. Sullivan had the opportunity to taste-test butter made by our preschool classes. She was asked by the preschoolers to provided feedback about the color, the taste, and the texture. Mrs. Sullivan gets the award for being the bravest taste-tester! If you have a Green Meadow preschooler in your family they are ready to make butter for the holiday season.

These adorable squirrels can be spotted in the hallway outside the Art Room. They were created by some of our Grade 1 artists.

The temperatures are dropping and winter is on the way. We are committed to getting students outside for recess throughout the winter with the exception of extreme cold temperatures. The change of scenery, fresh air, and physical play all support a successful day of learning.

As the weather shifts, you will be asked to send your child to school with the following items:

- winter coat

- gloves or mittens

- a hat

- snow boots

- snow pants

Items should be labeled with your child's name. If you have items your child has grown out of that you would like to donate to the school or your child needs any of these items, please reach out to Ann Rutherford at arutherford@maynard.k12.ma.us or Maria Bourgeois at mbourgeois@maynard.k12.ma.us. If you need support accessing these items both Ann and Maria can help connect you with resources.

Grade 2 Hour of Code Week Grade 2 Hour of Code Week

The “Hour of Code” event takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. It is held annually, typically in December, in recognition of the birthday (December 9, 1906) of Computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper. This year it will take place at GMS on December 15-19th. The program was designed to celebrate coding and raise awareness. It was intended to be a quick way to show that anybody can learn the basics of coding and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. Today it’s become a global movement, participating in 180 countries and 45 languages.

Green Meadow Grade 2 Parents and Caregivers are invited to attend a Computer Science class with their student. A Google form sign-up will be available to families through email after the Thanksgiving break.

The following is a schedule for Grade 2 classes:

Monday, Dec 15th Mrs. Jones (9:15-10:00)

Tuesday, Dec 16th Ms. LeBlanc (9:15-10:00)

Wednesday, Dec 17th Sra. Flores (9:15-10:00)

Thursday, Dec 18th Mrs. Holly (9:15-10:00)

Friday, Dec 19th Ms. Norcross (9:15-10:00)

With November upon us and Thanksgiving around the corner, many of us feel a shift toward noticing the aspects of our lives for which we are grateful. Finding gratitude is a practiced discipline that can flourish all year long, one adults and children alike can learn. Research shows that kids best learn an “attitude of gratitude” by watching their parents. Check out these ten tips for raising grateful kids. Here are some family activities, book suggestions and a Green Meadow favorite song to help you get your gratitude on! Questions or feedback? Please contact Julie Danforth at jdanforth@maynard.k12.ma.us.

Green Meadow Playground Reminder Green Meadow Playground Reminder

Please remember that our school playground must remain closed during arrival and dismissal times each day to ensure student safety.

We have four buses and four vans that need to safely enter and exit the bus circle. When families use the playground during these times, other students often run over to join them, sometimes into the path of buses or vans. During dismissal, our staff’s full attention is on making sure all students are safely dismissed, so we ask that parents and guardians closely supervise children who have already been dismissed.

If you would like to enjoy some outdoor play after school, the Fowler School playground is available for families to use.

Thank you for helping us keep all students safe!

We are Hiring! We are Hiring!
