🌟 Leveling Up Our Literacy!
This week we are beginning to put all of our reading comprehension skills into practice as we beginning our review all of the skills that we have learned this year. As we head toward the Georgia Milestones in a week, we are continuing to investigate and practice! We are combining all our ELA skills to dive deeper into the "how" and "why" behind various types of writing passages.
What We Are Mastering Together:
Our students are working on several key "Success Criteria" to become expert readers:
The Big Picture: We’re identifying if an author is trying to inform, entertain, or persuade us, and who they are writing for.
Seeing Different Sides: We are looking at the narrator’s perspective and how the story changes depending on who is telling it.
The Power of Words: Students are hunting for figurative language (like similes and metaphors) to see how authors paint a picture with words.
Text Features: We’re using maps, captions, and bold words as "clues" to help us understand the information faster.
Phonics: Schwa Sound (Practice available on Kids A-Z)
(Examples: above, soda, the, bacon, animal, carrot)
Grammar: Review of Skills
Writing: Milestones Platform Practice (opinion & informational)
Success Criteria:
Identify the general purpose (e.g., entertain, inform, persuade) and target audience of texts
Describe different perspectives of the narrators or speakers
Identify the context in which the texts is written
Use structures and features of texts to aid comprehension
Identify and describe the use of figurative language in texts
Compare how people live in different parts of the world and why
Analyze how setting affects people’s needs, actions, and routines
Identify how cultural stories and practices shape beliefs and relationships
Compare community experiences across time and traditions
Use textual and visual evidence to support understanding and comparison
Mathematics
Unit 8: Area & Perimeter of Polygons
This week we are continuing with Math Unit 8: Area & Perimeter. Students will be measuring side lengths of polygons to determine the perimeter and extend their understanding of area measurement by explaining that the area of a rectangle can be determined by multiplying the side lengths (width x length).
Key Concepts to Remember:
- Area (measures space INSIDE of the shape)= Length x Width
- Perimeter (measures around the OUTSIDE of the shape)= Add ALL Sides
Weekly Focus: Measuring Area and Perimeter
- Determine the length of various objects using whole inches and fractional inches to ¼.
- Calculate the area of a rectangle or square using the formula length x width.
- Calculate the perimeter of a given shape.
*If you would like to help your child at home with math, here are two resources:

Science: Conservation & Environment
Some of the learning targets for this unit are:
- Ask questions to collect information and create records of sources and effects of pollution on the plants and animals.
- Explore, research, and communicate solutions, such as conservation of resources and recycling of materials, to protect plants and animals.
This week we are in the beginning stages of our society: Rocket Leaders. Next up... job applications and product ideas. Take a look at Pinterest for some ideas to brainstorm with your child for manufacturing. A few things to keep in mind: product are made AT SCHOOL. Any items brought in for manufacturing at school will be charged an import fee!
