1 de abril - Información sobre el Referéndum Operativo 1 de abril - Información sobre el Referéndum Operativo

What cuts will be made if this operational referendum does not pass?

Over the course of the last three years the District has been making cuts to the budget. With the failure of last year's operational referendum the school district had to cut $5 million from our budget going into the start of the 2024-2025 school year (details of these reductions were outlined in the February newsletter). The school districts budget last year (2023-2024) was $53 million. At the start of this school year our budget was decreased to $48 million ($5 million less) to ensure our revenues matched our expenses for this school year.

Therefore, when determining this (April 1) operational referendum ask, the District based needs off of $48 million, not $53 million. I have been asked this a few times so I want to simply ensure people realize our budget was reduced by $5 million and those reductions cannot come back as we are currently operating under our "new normal" budget.

Just as we shared last year the cuts we would need to make, and followed through with all of those items, we would need to execute the below cuts going into the 2025-2026 school year:

  • STAFF AND PROGRAM CUTS:
    • Reduction of 15-20 more staff.
      • This would be in addition to the already reduced staffing that has taken place over the past three years (totaling a reduction of 54 employees).
      • BASD said we would reduce staff by 35-40 employees if last year's referendum failed. We reduced staff by 39 employees last year - exactly what we said we would need to do.
      • If this operational referendum does not pass we WILL need to reduce student programs.
        • Limiting students' exposure to critical academic areas along with fine arts, STEM, and career opportunities essential for success in an evolving workforce.
  • INCREASE FEES:
    • Student and community use fees.
      • We had to increase fees going into the 2024-2025 school year due to the failure of the operational referendum last year and would need to continue to increase fees going into the 2025-2026 school year if the operational referendum does not pass on April 1. These increases would be for student activities along with community use of our facilities.
  • REDUCE TRANSPORTATION:
    • Eliminate bus routes (this would be for public & private schools in BASD).
      • As a reminder, BASD is mandated by the state of Wisconsin to provide transportation for both public and private schools within our community.
  • REDUCE RESOURCES:
    • Essential materials / resources for classrooms.
      • This would continue to reduce materials for schools and classrooms across BASD.
  • FACILITY CUTS:
    • Delay maintenance = increased expenses in the future.
      • To keep up with maintenance needs in the school district BASD should be spending $1.4 million per year on our facilities (based on most recent 5-10 year capital improvement study). However, we have been held to a $250,000 budget for maintenance needs for the past few years now due to our financial situation. Therefore, we have delayed maintenance needs while trying to ensure we address what we can to ensure we prolong the life of all of our buildings and grounds across the district.

Social media posts questioning our ranking nationally. Social media posts questioning our ranking nationally.

There has been a few inquires from community members about how we rank in the nation as some sources are being shared amongst citizens in the community that paint a negative picture of BASD. Therefore, I put together the information IN THIS LINK for everyone to be educated about the misconceptions that are out there in relation to trying to compare Burlington or Wisconsin to the national average or to other states when looking at the ACT.

So, take a look. This data is pulled from national ACT data and is not BASD data.

Future Educators scholarship raised $4,462! Future Educators scholarship raised $4,462!

A few years back, BASD staff wanted to pay it forward to students who want to go into the field of education and started a “Future Educators” scholarship for BHS seniors interested in the field of education. Within 30 minutes, BASD staff raised $4,462!!! The Scholarship team looks forward to giving 3 - $1000 scholarships yet again this year during Senior Scholarship night at BHS! Kudos to our BASD staff for their commitment and efforts to pay it forward!!!

BHS Academic Bowl - Advisor: Julie Verhagen.

The Academic Bowl annual event took place on February 19th at Beloit Memorial High School. The BHS 20 member team consisted of 4 freshmen, 4 sophomores, 4 juniors, and 8 seniors. Students competed in written and oral tests against teams from the other Southern Lakes Conference schools and placed 3rd out of the 8 schools attending, with a final team score of 758. In addition, BHS had three first place medal winners for the subject area test: Junior Brandon Piccolo (Physical Science), Senior Ava Fix (World History), and Freshman Ryan Demoon (Biology). Special thanks to Chris Fidler and Sue Deans (former BHS Special Ed teacher) for chaperoning and helping out with the team.

BHS Ceramics 2 Students Making a Difference

We are thrilled to share that our Semester 1 Ceramics 2 students have made a significant impact by creating handmade ceramic bowls for the Empty Bowls Racine event! This wonderful initiative aims to fight hunger in our community by providing attendees with a warm bowl of soup and a unique, hand-crafted bowl to take home. The funds raised at this event will go directly to local organizations working hard to support those in need. Our talented Ceramics 2 students put their skills to work by crafting and decorating wheel-thrown bowls to be donated to this cause. A big shoutout to these amazing students who contributed their time and creativity to help make a difference: Kimberly Cabello-Espinoza, Eavy Christensen, Madison Cornell, Gina Dagostino, Belem Lira, Ellie Pieters, Ashleigh Schkeryantz, and Rosalyn Schumacher. We're incredibly proud of their work and how their art is contributing to such an important cause.

BHS Forensics Team
The BHS Forensics team earned 4th place in the large team division at the Union Grove tournament. And get this—there was only a 5-point difference between 4th and 2nd place!
  • 1st Place Winners: Lily Boyle in Prose and Addie Schwochert in Storytelling
  • 2nd Place: Taryn Heeter in Storytelling
  • 3rd Place: Dominic Dennis in Expository and Fabian Jimenez in Impromptu
  • Finalists: Hailee Puglisi in Expository and Tucker Larose in Impromptu
What an incredible start to the 2025 Forensics Tournament season!

Future Farmers of America (FFA) Week
  • On Thursday, February 20th, the Burlington FFA had the privilege of celebrating National FFA Week by hosting a faculty appreciation lunch for our amazing high school staff. The lunch featured a delicious baked potato bar with a variety of toppings, an assortment of fresh vegetables, and warm, mouth watering cookies! Students served over 70 faculty members, showing our appreciation for all their hard work and dedication. In addition to the lunch, students had a blast with FFA Week activities including: Agriculture trivia, toy horse racing, corn hole, and the infamous Kiss a Calf event!

  • Through the “Generations In Bloom” project, FFA students worked hand-in-hand with members of our senior citizens in the community, bringing smiles, laughter, and meaningful connections across generations. Thanks to a grant from the Burlington Community Fund, we welcomed seniors from three different local facilities to our campus, where they chose and planted their very own summer flowers. Our students will continue to nurture the flowers, and in early May, they will personally deliver the blooming beauties to the senior residents. It was a day full of joy, learning, and community spirit—showing how public schools create meaningful connections and impact.

The 4K program at Dyer Elementary has been a tremendous success this year, with students actively engaged in early learning experiences that set the foundation for future academic growth. By housing both the 4K and Early Childhood (EC) programs in the same building, we have streamlined support for both staff and students, creating a more cohesive and effective learning environment.

This structure has allowed for greater collaboration among educators, ensuring that each child receives the individualized support they need to thrive. The dedication and creativity of our 4K teachers and support staff have been instrumental in making this program a success, fostering a nurturing and engaging atmosphere where our youngest learners develop essential skills in preparation for kindergarten and beyond.

  • We recently celebrated a major milestone—our 100th day of school! Our students had a blast dressing up as 100-year-olds, complete with gray hair, canes, and glasses. Others showed off their creativity by wearing t-shirts decorated with 100 items, from stickers to pom-poms. It was a fantastic way to bring math, creativity, and fun together in a memorable celebration.

  • A huge shout-out to our 4th-grade school ambassadors for stepping up and helping organize our stage area. It had become quite the challenge to navigate, but thanks to their teamwork and leadership, it’s now a much more functional and tidy space. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication to making our school a better place!

  • Read Across America Week was last week. This is always such a special time at Waller Elementary, and we were especially grateful for our guest readers—including some of our very own Board of Education members—who joined us to share their love of reading with our students. There were fun activities to promote literacy and a love of books across our school.

  • During the month of February members of the Winkler Student council planned and carried out a Tissue Drive for Winkler School. The students created a goal of 210 tissue boxes that would be brought in during the week of February 17th. Once again, Winkler families were very generous and donated over 250 tissue boxes! The students were able to participate in “Boogie Dance” as a reward for exceeding the 210 tissue box goal!

Health Services have successfully completed 749 hearing screenings and 978 vision screenings during the school day with students across BASD! 5K Oral Health Presentations and Seal-A-Smile are currently underway in our elementary schools, promoting good dental habits early on.

  • The Oral Health Presentations are done by our district nurses to help explain the importance of taking care of oral hygiene with our youngest learners.
  • Seal-A-Smile is where outside dental hygienists come into our schools and provide dental cleanings to students during the school day.

During the month of February BASD also conducted 135 staff biometric screenings. Also, when it comes to school safety, 81 staff members have also been trained this year in Stop the Bleed Training (training to respond to emergency situations).

School Board unanimously approved Start College Now/Early College Credit School Board unanimously approved Start College Now/Early College Credit

School districts are required to pay for credits students take that fall under the Start College Now and Early College Credit Program (per the state of Wisconsin). These credits are paid for at a reduced rate due to the courses being offered to high school students. Students can only request courses for Start College Now or Early College Credit if the school district does not already offer the course at Burlington High School. If a student were to fail the course, the student/family does have to then pay for the course. Start College Now and Early College Credit board approval takes place twice a year for the fall and spring semesters. This is not unique to Burlington and is an offering/program across the state for all districts to follow.

Reid Oldenburg, BHS Assistant Principal, presented the Start College Now and Early College Credit Program for Fall 2025 to the School Board.
