Mustang News: January 9, 2026
From the Principal's Desk
Welcome back, GMS students and families. It was great to have everyone back in the building this week. Students settled quickly into routines, and the energy across campus made for a strong start to the semester.
We are excited to kick off our ski program next week, with our 6th grade students heading up to Crested Butte on Friday. This is always a highlight of the winter and a great opportunity for students to learn and enjoy the outdoors together.
Girls basketball is also in full swing, and it has been fun to see our athletes competing, working hard, and supporting one another.
We are looking forward to an awesome semester filled with learning, growth, and great experiences for our students.

This week for lunch...
Happy New Year, GMS family! During the month of January, our school is focused on the value/practice "I actively participate." Active participation means being engaged in your learning and your community. At GMS, there are so many opportunities to actively participate, both in and outside of the classroom. Students might:
- Raise their hand to ask or answer questions
- Contribute ideas during class discussions or group work
- Listen attentively and responding thoughtfully
- Try their best—even when something feels challenging
- Participate in an elective class that might contribute to new passions or hobbies
- Join a school sport
- Attend sporting events to cheer on their peers
- Try out a school club and give back to our school while making new friends
- Sit with someone new during lunch
- And so many more!
We know that when students actively participate, learning becomes more meaningful and memorable, confidence grows through sharing ideas and taking healthy risks, classrooms become more inclusive, supportive spaces, and everyone benefits from diverse thoughts, perspectives, and creativity. Participation isn’t about having the “perfect” answer—it’s about being present and willing to engage. Let’s keep showing up, speaking up, and learning together!
Go, Mustangs!

In addition, we ask that parents and guardians review our GMS Cell Phone Agreement (English / Spanish). 7th and 8th Grade Ski Day Information
We look forward to bringing 7th and 8th graders skiing on January 30th and February 7th. In preparation for these special days, we'd like to remind you that there will not be any programming at GMS on these days. If your child does not plan to participate in the ski program, please plan to keep him/her home these days and contact the GCS Office to report their absence at (970) 641-7710.
- Students that do participate in the ski program will bring home a code of conduct form for parent/guardian signature.
- Students may request a school sack lunch, bring their own lunch, or bring money to purchase food. Please note that cash is not accepted at most restaurants.
- Ski/snowboards are not allowed on school buses. Parents need to bring students on ski days or leave ski/snowboards at school if necessary. Trucks for gear will be located on the north end of the GMS building.
- Students will load school buses at 8:30am. In the afternoon, 7th and 8th graders will either return on a school bus or the 3:45 or 4:15 RTA bus from the Mt. CB Transit Center. Students will be allowed to call parents/guardians when they board their bus for more specific pick up times.
- Parents/guardians may pick up their child and ski gear in the GCS parking lot at approximately 4:30-5:00pm.
