Heart Word Heart Word

zoom_out_map

Heart words are what we once called sight words. We call them heart words because we put a heart under the sounds we haven't learned yet, such as "ere" or "oul". We have been learning many of them this year. Here are a few of the most recent ones to practice at home:

should, there, my, would, they, who, said, for, or

Silent "e" Words Silent "e" Words

zoom_out_map

Last week we started learning about the silent "e." As you know, it makes the vowel say it's name in words like make, bike, and ride. We are combining our new skills with our old skill to become more fluent with our reading. To help your child build fluency have your child read to you as often as possible. Make learning to read a fun experience!

What's Your Child's Bedtime?? What's Your Child's Bedtime??

zoom_out_map
Does your child's teacher call you because your child is falling asleep in class or is often crying during the day? Is he or she falling asleep on the bus or as soon as he/she gets home? It could be because your child is not getting the recommended number of hours of sleep! 5 & 6 year old children need anywhere from 10 to 12 hours of sleep, especially during growth spurts. Sleep helps their body have time to grow and their brain time to relax. To help get the correct number of hours of sleep start with setting a bed time and STICK TO IT. After awhile it will become routine. About an hour before bedtime it is recommended to turn all screens off (video games, tv's, computers, tablets, etc.) to start calming the body down. This is a great time for brushing teeth and getting ready for bed. Then, maybe play a board game or read a book together, something calming. REMEMBER TO STICK WITH THE BED TIME, even if your child says he/she isn't tired! In the morning get your child up at the same time to create the routine. Children of all ages thrive on routine. Please help set your child up for success!

Extra Clothes Extra Clothes

zoom_out_map

Please be sure your child has an extra uniform and underwear in his/her backpack. Also, make sure it is weather appropriate. Uniform color sweaters and sweatshirts WITHOUT a hood are also ok to keep at school if your child tends to get cold. Please make sure your child's name is on it and remind them to put it in their cubby when they are not wearing it. Teachers are not able to keep track of sweaters, hats, & gloves. Each class has 27 students and it is not possible for teachers to always watch each child put their hat away.
