Taking Stock: July 2025

July 2025
Stockwell Priorities
- To ensure our children are happy and we explain things well
- To ensure no child leaves our school unable to read
- To ensure children learn a broad vocabulary to access the world around them
- To enhance the educational experiences of diagnosed and undiagnosed children with SEND
And just like that, we have reached the end of another academic year. I can't quite beleive that it has been four years since I became Head of School at Stockwell. As I look back over my time at the school, I can't believe how far we have come.
We are saying goodbye to a few members of staff. To Ms Pinto, Mrs Abdullahi, Mrs Saloojee, Mr Hirsch, Mrs Ackermann, Ms Thomas, Mrs Howe and Ms Hancock, I wish you the very best for the future. Good luck with your next adventure and we look forward to hearing all about what comes next.
To our leaving Year 6s, stay amazing. You have the world at your feet and I expect you to take it by storm. You have been incredible and I cannot wait to hear about what you do next.
To the rest of the Stockwell community, have a fantastic summer. I look forward to hearing all about your amazing summer adventures both near and far.
Year 6 ended the year in style. Their performance of Charlie and the Chocolate factory was incredible and they did a fantastic job of taking on Charlie Bucket's journey to meet Mr Willy Wonka and all the other incredible characters in the story. Whether they were acting their socks off or dancing in unison, it was truly a delightful show.
The Year 6 Leavers' Assembly showed us just how far the children have come. It was wonderful to hear their memories of their time at school as they read the speeches that they had prepared for the audience and the parents.
Finally, we ended the year with the Year 6 disco. For those not lucky enough to see the end of the disco, the children danced their hearts out. What a way to see them off to secondary school.
Well done to all of the children that took Rocksteady lessons this year. The children ended their learning with a concert to parents. We have loved having Rocksteady at Stockwell.
Watch this space for more information in the new year.
We held our annual Caribbean celebrations on Friday 27th June. Year 5 kicked off the proceedings with their Carnival assembly, teaching us about the experiences of the Windrush Generation and showcasing their learning. They took us on a journey through time, starting in the post-war years and bringing us right up to the present day.
This was followed by our Caribbean celebrations. The community came together to share food, talk, listen to music and play games. It was a wonderful afternoon. A huge thank you to the parents, carers and staff that made it happen.
No year at the BJS Federation of Schools would be complete without The Big One. The bands and choirs from Bonneville, Jessop and Stockwell came together to put on an amazing show. The theme this year was 'A Journey Through Musical Time' and what a journey it was. I was unable to be there, but the Stockwell choir, though small, did me proud.
I am amazed by the talent on display at all three schools and am so glad that we had the opportunity to showcase this.
One of our very own got married at the weekend.
With her permission, I am delighted to announce that, as of September, Ms Moses will be known as Mrs Chen.
I am sure that you will join me in congratulating the happy couple and wishing them the very best for the future.
May you make lots of happy memories together!
We ended the term with our Reading Breakfast picnic. The playground was full of parents, carers, children, staff, friends and families having pastries and fruit, waffles and hot drinks. It was a wonderful way to end the school year.
Children and parents went home laden with books to read over the holidays and the weather held on just long enough for us to stay outside.
Thank you to everyone who came along, to the staff who manned breakfast stations (and made sure that everyone was fed), to Mr Nunes (and his gang of helpers) for getting the playground ready (and tidied up again afterwards and, of course, to Ms Thomas for organising the whole thing.
All that remains is for me to wish you all a wonderful, restful summer break. Thank you to each and every member of the Stockwell community for your support and your commitment to ensuring that the children become the very best versions of themselves. I hope you al have a a fun-filled, sunny holiday.
See you bright and early on 2nd September for another incredible year.
Sports Update
This term a group year 5 and 6 children have been travelling to Brockwell Park for the Surrey CCC cricket league. They have won 5/6 games and are using their strength of batting to post high scores.
16 of our KS2 Sports Leaders went to the Oval to watch Surrey Vs Durham in the Cricket County Championship. The children watched the game and took part in some activities to develop there sporting skills. We all had a great time.
By Mr Hirsch, PE lead
In June, Our year 6 boys had a football tournament at Kennington park were we made it all the way to the semi final and placed 3rd overall.
The day started really badly, as we lost 1-0 to St Bernadette's. However, we turned it around with a 1-0 win vs Vauxhall, and we beat Hillmead who have been unbeaten all year 3-0 with Rayan our Crystal Palace star scoring all three goals. Our biggest test was yet to come as unbeaten Honeywell were our next game. In true Stockwell fashion we took the game to them and beat them with a lovely 2/0 win.
With the groups being wrapped up we were on the quarter finals vs Allen Edwards. The game ended 1/1 and it went to penalties with Ashley saving 4 and Aleandro scoring our winning penalty.
Unfortunately, our tournament ended at the semi finals with the penalties. Regardless of the result we can hold our heads up incredibly high as our boys put on a great advert for the level of football at Stockwell.
Player of the tournament: Rayan 6A
Goal of the tournament: Aleandro 6A

Parent and Carer Support
Friends of Stockwell (FOS) PTA
We have an active PTA, called Friends of Stockwell, who do a brilliant job of fundraising for the school and bringing the community together. It is great to see new faces taking part. Every parent is a Friend of Stockwell. I ask that everyone gets involved. If you can spare an hour per term (that's three hours per year), your contribution would make a huge difference.
Please email friendsofstockwell@gmail.com to get involved.
FOS Update
This year the Summer Fair took place on Friday 11th July. This raised just over £400 for the school.
Have you ever wanted to get involved in event organising? We have a group of parents on the PTA who are happy to support you, but haven't got time / don't feel able to take on a coordinator role.
Please get in touch with friendsofstockwell@gmail.com if you're interested and want to know more about what this would involve.
Call to Action
Can you help out around the school? Are you a keen gardener? Do you have skills or knowledge that the children would benefit from? Visit our Call to Action page to let us know how you can help.
Attendance
Central to raising standards in all schools and ensuring all pupils can fulfil their potential is the need for children to attend school regularly to benefit from their education.
There is a strong link between good learning, high achievement, rapid progress and developing good social skills with excellent attendance.
We want to take this opportunity to outline our expectations for school attendance this academic year.
If your child arrives at school from 9am they will be marked as LATE, if they arrive after 9.30am, they will be classed as “late after the register is closed” and their attendance is classed as absent for the morning session. As the registers would have already been returned to the Department for Education.
Regular poor punctuality can also have a negative effect on your child’s attendance as well as their academic learning. Being 6 minutes late each day equals 30 minutes of missed learning every week.
If your child’s attendance drops below 90%, we will need to share our concerns with the Local Authority Education Welfare Officer at Lambeth Council.
Holidays in Term Time
Education Law states that it is not a parent’s right to take a child out of school during term time to go on holiday. Families must seek permission from the school and your school’s Headteacher is limited in what they can authorise. We can authorise leave if a child is in a performance and a performance license has been granted by the local authority. For any other authorised holiday, there must be extenuating circumstances therefore we cannot authorise a holiday because it is cheaper outside of term time.
Attendance Winners
We have ended the year in line with National expectations, at 95% attendance for the year. This is an amazing achievement.
Well done to 4B for the best attendance in the school this year at 97%
EYFS Attendance Winners
RH - 92%
KS1 Attendance Winners
1S - 96%
LKS2 Attendance Winners
4B - 97%
UKS2 Attendance Winners
5H, 6A, 5T - 96%
School Uniform
School uniform should be worn throughout the school day. While we do not enforce that all school uniform should be branded, children should be wearing the correct colours (white t-shirt tops, navy trousers/ skirts/ pinafore dresses, sensible black shoes). Football boots/ coloured trainers are not school uniform and should not be worn.
Children should be changing into their PE kits for PE lessons (blue or black tracksuit bottoms, plain white t-shirt, trainers). We have made arrangements for girls and boys to be able to change separately, so the expectation is that all children change for PE.
While our supplier of school uniform is WearAbouts, we do have some items available for sale from the school office. Please check with us to see if we have what you need in stock.
Reporting a Concern
If you have a concern, please see your child's class teacher in the first instance.
If they are unable to resolve the problem, please speak to your child's phase leader.
If they are unable to help, please see one of the school's Assistant Headteachers.
If you are still dissatisfied, please see the Head of School.

There is also a range of other support including: an online interactive magazine, discussion boards, self-help tools, and wellbeing activities.
The new Lambeth microsite to accompany the ‘It’s Not That Deep’ campaign is aimed specifically at young people and contains information for those experiencing harassment, those wanting to become allies, and those who are doing the harmful behaviour.

We have an engagement hub with a specific page focused on what we can do to improve public safety for women and girls which asks residents and visitors to tell us where in Lambeth they feel safe and unsafe by placing a pin on the Map. Please sign up for email updates about the project using the ‘follow’ button on the new site.
Fostering in Lambeth
A new child comes into care every day in Lambeth. Many of these children will need the love and stability that a foster carer can provide.
What is fostering?
Being a foster parent means caring for someone else’s child as part of your family. Foster carers look after children who are unable to live with their parents, through no fault of their own. You'll be given lots of training and support, as well as allowances to cover living costs, the costs of food, travel and for the time you'll need to invest in supporting any child in your care.
Who can foster?
Lambeth Fostering welcome applications from everyone with a passion for caring. You just need to be over 21, have a spare room, good written and spoken English, and permanent UK residency.
