5 Things to Know Weekly Update
September 2, 2025
Dear Colleagues:
It’s a little disconcerting to have a holiday right when the semester begins, but it’s not unwelcome. I hope you had a restful long weekend. My son was successfully married, and yes, I did cry – but the event was mostly joyful. I’m including a picture of my son and his wife in their traditional outfits at the tea ceremony – absolutely stunning. One more son to go – I wish you all the same luck with your children and their eventual partners!

I had a wonderful time meeting many students at my ice cream event last week, from art majors to cosmo students to soccer players. They all seem delighted to be here and positive about their classes and faculty members. Let’s continue to help them along their pathways (and feed them when we can).
Now that the semester is underway, committees will start meeting again, so please volunteer if you get a notice from your union or other group. We will have new leadership on the Tech Committee, among others, and we need involvement in participatory governance from all parts of campus.
We have some important self-defense trainings coming up on Wednesday, September 17, 9-11 a.m. or Tuesday, October 14, 1-3 p.m. These trainings will be led by our very own John Wolfe and Oscar Aranda and will include a quick overview of safety tips and situational awareness, followed by a chance to practice some basic defensive moves. Register in Cornerstone if you’d like to join, and don’t forget the required Assumption of Risk form (attached below).
Some recognition for our women’s soccer and football teams for their recent wins – looking forward to our first home football game this Saturday, September 6 at Noon, which is a great time to hang out with colleagues. And we are not far from our first art shows and theater productions – theater has some updated web pages where you can read about The Diviners and buy your tickets.
My week will include a lot of catching up as well as final interviews for a new Business Services Director – stay cool and I hope to run into you (but not while driving a cart)!
