Dear Incoming Kindergarten Families,

Placement plans are underway for our next school year. This includes preparing to welcome your child into the Lowell School community.

We will be having Kindergarten Screening on Friday, June 3rd at the Phillips Building, 30 Common St., Watertown. This will be an opportunity for your child to visit a Kindergarten classroom and meet individually with a member of our Kindergarten Team.

Your child will be assigned to a specific time between the hours of approximately 8:30am-2:15 pm. We will be sending appointment times within the next week. The screening will last approximately 45 minutes.

Screening

The state of Massachusetts mandates that all children entering Kindergarten take part in a screening. This is our opportunity to observe students in the school setting and also provides students with an opportunity to become acquainted with the Cunniff school. Our faculty will provide opportunities for your child to engage in a sampling of activities. Additionally, your child will meet with someone from our multidisciplinary screening team (Kindergarten teachers, Special Education staff, and English Language teachers). The Early Screening Inventory (ESI) will be administered individually. It is a brief developmental skills assessment that allows teachers to observe skills used in a school setting.

Once the screening process is complete, the Kindergarten placement process takes place. The Kindergarten teacher and children in your child's screening group will not necessarily be in your child's class in September. Classroom and teacher assignments will be made following the screening process. Ultimately, our goal is to create balanced classrooms so that all students have opportunities for social and academic growth.

Your Role

We ask your help in making this experience a rewarding and pleasant one for you and your child. Please arrive a few minutes before your scheduled appointment. Since the Lowell School environment is new to your child, you can assist us by introducing this upcoming visit as a pleasant and exciting experience.

On the day of the screening, you will meet with Melina Jacovides, Guidance Counselor, while your child is participating in the screening. Ms. Jacovides will give a presentation about what to expect when school starts in September.
