Continuous Improvement and East Excellence
At East, our Continuous Improvement Plan is centered on creating a learning community where every student and staff member thrives. For the 26-27 school year, our work will focus on three key priorities: increasing student engagement, strengthening staff collaboration, and working toward a unified school culture through our shared commitment to East Excellence.
East Excellence is grounded in four core values: Engagement, Accountability, Support, and Teamwork. These values guide how we learn, teach, lead, and interact with one another each day. By creating consistent expectations for both students and staff, we are building a school environment where everyone feels connected and responsible. Through engaging classroom experiences, collaborative professional practices, and a shared commitment to these core values, we are working to ensure that every student is prepared for future success. We believe that when students and staff embrace East Excellence together, we strengthen our school community and create opportunities for all students. We are especially grateful for the partnership of our families as we continue this important work and strive to make East High School a place where excellence is expected and celebrated!
Family Partnership - Help Us Create a Productive Learning Environment
Cell Phone Expectations
What: Our goal is to create a learning environment where students can fully engage in instruction without the distraction of personal devices. We value our students and their access to an excellent education, and we want classroom time focused on learning, discussion, and collaboration. To support this goal, students will place their cell phones in the classroom's designated phone receptacle at the beginning of each instructional class period.
Why: Cell phones are a significant source of distraction for many students. With constant access to messaging apps, social media, games, and notifications, it can be difficult to maintain focus during instruction. Research has linked excessive cell phone use to decreased academic performance, reduced social interaction, and increased challenges related to attention and well-being. By removing this distraction during class, we can help students be more engaged, connected, and successful learners.
How:
At the beginning of each class period, students will place their cell phone in the classroom's designated phone receptacle.
Devices will remain in the receptacle for the duration of the instructional period.
Students may use their devices during class transitions, lunch, study halls, and Viking Block.
Consequences for Non-Compliance: We will use a progressive and restorative approach to support positive decision-making while maintaining a productive learning environment.
If a student does not place their phone in the receptacle or places a fake device in the receptacle, and is later found using the device during class, the teacher will:
1. Teacher will verbally remind students about our expectations.
2. Teacher will notify the family and grade-level administrator.
3. Teacher will submit a referral to the grade-level administrator who will use a progressive consequence approach to help with student decision-making. That progressive approach may include detentions, Saturday Schools, meetings with the family, and placing the phone in a secured pouch.
Our Shared Commitment: We recognize that cell phones are an important part of students' lives. These expectations are not intended as a punishment, but rather as a way to create classrooms where all students can fully engage, learn, and connect with one another. We appreciate the support of our students, families, and staff as we work together to create the best possible learning environment.
Lateness Policy
Every minute of learning counts. When students arrive on time, they are prepared to start the day and participate fully in lessons from the very beginning. Consistent punctuality also helps students develop responsibility. Understand the consequences for being late without an approved excusal:
Student receives “free-bees” for tardies 1, 2, 3, 4
Detention (VB or Afterschool) on tardy 5, 7, 9, 11
Saturday School (or equivalent) on tardy 12 with a reset
Students
Asher Stoll
Congratulations to East High School student Asher Stoll, who has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) Scholarship for the 2026-27 academic year. Asher is one of just 210 students nationwide chosen for this highly competitive scholarship, which provides an opportunity to spend an academic year in Germany living with a host family, attending school, and participating in cultural and language immersion experiences. During the program, Asher will represent the United States as a student ambassador while developing a deeper understanding of German culture, history, and government. We are incredibly proud of Asher for earning this exceptional opportunity and wish him an enriching and memorable experience abroad.
9th Graders and New Students
On August 13th, the incoming freshmen class and new students in all grade levels came to East to familiarize themselves with the building. They had the opportunity to find their rostered classrooms and meet with student leaders to learn about East Excellence and what it means to be a Viking. The band and cheer team put on a special show to get everyone in the spirit!
