Mustang Minute
November 2026 Stay Humble, Work Hard, Be Kind
⏰ Being On Time Matters
As we begin Quarter 2, Sheyenne High School is placing an increased emphasis on being on time and ready to learn. Tardies may seem small individually, but they add up to lost instructional time and can disrupt learning for both the student arriving late and the rest of the class.
Being on time matters because it helps students:
- Maximize learning. Arriving on time means students are present for directions, instruction, and important information at the beginning of class.
- Build responsibility and good habits. Punctuality requires planning, organization, and accountability, skills that help students succeed in school and beyond.
- Prepare for the workplace. Employers expect employees to arrive on time, be dependable, and be ready to work. High school is a great place to build those habits now.
What You Can Expect in Quarter 2?
Week of November 2: We will communicate with students and families through Schoology, the November Family Mustang Minute, social media and Blackboard about our expectations and the importance of arriving to class on time.
Beginning the week of November 9: Every two weeks, we will review each student's tardies. For every five tardies accumulated during that two-week period, the student will be assigned 90 minutes of detention.
For example:
- 5 tardies = 90 minutes
- 10 tardies = 180 minutes
- 15 tardies = 270 minutes
Students will receive a weekly email letting them know how many detention hours they need to complete.
Making Up Detention Time
We want students to have flexibility and an easy path to getting their time completed. Detention may be served:
- Before school
- After school
- During an open block, if the student has one
Students should report to the office and check in, or make arrangements ahead of time with a teacher. Bring some homework, use the time productively, and the completed time will be recorded.
Why is completing detention important?
Unserved detention can affect a student's eligibility to participate in clubs, organizations, activities, and certain school functions. This includes non-class-related field trips, school-sponsored events such as prom, and, for seniors, participation in the commencement ceremony.
Unserved detention hours also carry forward into the next school year.
Our goal isn't simply to assign detention. Our goal is to help students develop the responsibility to be where they need to be, when they need to be there.
📱 Families: Please Check Infinite Campus Weekly
We are asking families to make a habit of checking their student's attendance and grades at least once each week. Regularly checking Infinite Campus is one of the easiest ways to catch concerns early and start a conversation at home.
West Fargo Public Schools provides its official Infinite Campus Help page with Campus Parent resources, including instructions for accessing the parent portal and app. Once in the app you can click on your student, click the 3 horizontal lines in the top left and click on attendance as well as on grades to view that information.

Lockers & Attendance
- All Sheyenne High School students are expected to use their assigned locker and school-issued lock to securely store personal belongings during the school day.
- PE Lockers: Students enrolled in Physical Education are provided a locker. Please remember to lock up all personal items to help keep belongings safe.
- Attendance matters. One of the strongest predictors of student success is consistent attendance and active participation in class.
- Families play a vital role in student success. Thank you for partnering with us to ensure students attend school regularly and are engaged in learning each day.
- In our block schedule, each class period represents a significant amount of instructional time. If an absence is unavoidable, students should communicate with their teachers before and after the absence to stay current with coursework and assignments.
- Whenever possible, we encourage families to schedule vacations and extended trips during school breaks to minimize missed instructional time.
- If your student needs to be absent or leave school for an appointment, please contact the school in advance so we can accurately record attendance and support a smooth dismissal process.
- Tardies: Arriving on time helps students start each class prepared for learning. Five unexcused tardies (UT) in a single week result in one hour of detention and may affect eligibility for extracurricular activities.
- Unknown or Unexcused Attendance: Missing class without authorization, or failing to follow proper attendance procedures, results in an unexcused absence (U) and one hour of detention. One or more unexcused absences may impact participation in extracurricular activities.
- Attendance accountability is important. Unresolved attendance concerns or unmet detention obligations may result in restrictions from participating in school activities, including dances and graduation ceremonies.
Our goal is not simply to enforce attendance expectations but to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed academically, socially, and personally. Thank you for partnering with us to support strong attendance habits and a positive school experience for all Mustangs. 🐴💙🧡
Mustang Time (Advisory & Flex)
- Advisory/Flex:
- Mondays all students are in advisory, Tuesday-Friday all students can flex schedule unless otherwise noted (Flex starts September 21 as long as we have a tool to manage it )
- ALL students use Securley Flex, which is a new tool that we will be gaining access to very soon.
- Attendance is taken and counts for eligibility
- Mondays in Advisory (all grade levels earn credit):
- Activities: Grade checks, weekly planning, and flex session sign-ups.
- Freshmen: Freshmen 101 Modules.
- Sophomores: Focus on Choice Ready
- Juniors: Cybersecurity Modules (required for graduation)
- Seniors: Senior Capston
- Choice Ready Dashboard Updates: Once per quarter per grade level
