Message from Mrs. Chavira, Campus Principal

Rattler Community,

We are half way through our 3rd marking period and we continue to do great things each week. This past week we had our 5th grade Lady Rattlers and Mighty Rattlers play their first game, bringing home the win. We also had our first Accelerated Instruction Camp this past Saturday. We had over 100 students join us and we want to thank all of the parents and guardians that continue to make certain their child is not falling behind. A special thank you to all of our educators that took part in this Saturday Camp. We have three additional Saturdays this semester and we continue to encourage our Rattlers to join us for a morning filled with fun and targeted support at all levels. In our newsletter you will find the following:

  • Week at a Glance
  • Attendance updates
  • Lexia recognitions
  • Shout-outs for the week.
Thank you again Rattler Community for your support. Thank you for entrusting TEAMSISD and Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary with your child's education.

Respectfully,

Cristina Sanchez-Chavira

SAFETY CONCERN: Reminder

Parents there are a few traffic concerns that have started to come up and we would like your support in making sure you do your part to keep our Rattlers and community safe.

  • Cell Phone Use: The use of cell phones within school zones is prohibited (unless used with a hands-free device) under Section 545.425 of the Texas Transportation Code. This could result in a $200 fine or more concerning, contribute to an accident. We have noticed more and more parents in line looking at their cell phone and not paying attention to the traffic flow or pedestrians. Accidents can happen in a second. Please put all phones away
  • Speeding in a school zone. In the morning we have noticed vehicles speeding to try to beat the gates closing in the morning. Please note that to avoid speeding we do close the gate at 7:43 unless there is a long traffic line.
  • Dropping off students in unsafe areas (street).
  • Parking in the parking lot and having students run through the parking lot with other moving vehicles.
Please note that these are all unsafe practices that are not work the few minutes. Our suggestion is that you plan your morning to ensure students arrive with enough time. If you know you are already going to be late, please do not place yourself or child as well as others in danger.

Valentine Candy Grams Benefitting James Butler Special Olympic Athletes

Shook’s Special Education Department will be selling Valentine Candy Grams for $3.00 each to help support our students who will be competing at the James Butler Spring Games. Grams will be sold beginning Monday, January 22 until all 500 grams are sold. Candy grams will consist of either a chocolate heart on a stick or valentine themed marshmallows on a stick (gram chosen at random). While Valentine's Day is an allowable treat day on our campus, we do not allow any type of deliveries from parents or outside companies for students. Instead, send them a Valentine candy gram to be delivered to their classroom during their Valentine's Day party while supporting a great cause!

Parents can stop by the front office during regular school hours to purchase with cash or visit the web store in their MySchoolBucks account. Students may purchase candy grams during lunch with the order form sent home. If purchasing grams with cash, please make sure to have exact change as the campus does not have change available.

Safety Reminders Safety Reminders

Dismissal Traffic

Rattler Community,

As a reminder, please make sure you are supporting our dismissal procedures. These procedures ensure that we are able to clear our traffic in 15 min or less. We ask for our continued support as well as thank you for your courtesy. Continue to be respectful to each other and avoid the following

  • speeding
  • cutting in line
  • honking
  • trying to circumvent the procedures.

We are proud of our community and how our actions reflect our commitment to student safety.

zoom_out_map

Traffic Flow to support a smooth drop-off/pick-up

Parents, please help us by no longer parking on any part of Paseo de Suerte. Parked vehicles make it difficult to move traffic.
zoom_out_map

Crossing Paseo del Suerte

Parents, we ask that you approach a crosswalk to go up to an administrator to help you cross. Individuals crossing at different locations are an accident waiting to happen. Drivers can not watch, vehicles, traffic control individuals, and pedestrians. Help us keep you and ourselves safe. WAIT until we cross you.
zoom_out_map

Traffic

Student Safety and Community Safety is our priority. It takes a second for an accident to occur and for this reason, we need to make sure that we have a clear mind and are not rushed when we approach our campus.

General

  • Remember to be courteous to all drivers.
  • Please refrain from honking or cutting drivers off. We need to always be courteous to each other. We are part of the same community.
  • We understand that we do not have enough parking for all parents. All schools struggle with parking. Please be aware of where you are driving and who is around you.
  • Always use crosswalks or approach administration or support personnel to cross you. We are our children's roll models. Would you like your child to think it is safe to cross anywhere down a street?

Car Drop-Off Etiquette

Car drop-off must be used by students that are independent enough to exit their vehicles with their backpacks on. Support your parent community by doing the following.

  • Always remain in your vehicle. *If you need to exit your vehicle to help your child, then your option should be to park and walk your child.
  • Always park at the top of the lane, first sign. Please do not stop at the door walkway. This limits the number of kids that can exit the vehicle.
  • Make sure students are ready to exit the vehicle. If your child requires much assistance from you, please park as you are encouraged to not exit your vehicle.

Car-pick-up Etiquette

  • Always display on your DASHBOARD your YELLOW car sign. If you do not have a car sign, please park to pick up your child.
  • Do not exit your vehicle. Always remain in your vehicle. We will bring your child to you.
  • Never park in our pick-up area
  • Do not utilize the exterior or 2nd lane to have kids run to you OR pass the vehicles before you.

In the event you feel a driver or parent is impacting student, please do not engage. Notify administration. We will do the following.

  • The administration will contact the parent and advise them of proper procedures
  • Second or severe offense: Vehicle information will be given to police services.

Thank you, Rattler Community, for your support. Let us make sure we keep our Rattlers safe.

HB114 Update

Effective on Sept.1st, 2023 it is now in law that a student may be either removed from class and placed in a disciplinary alternative education program, or expelled from a school for the possession, use, or delivery of marihuana or e-cigarettes on or near a public school property or at certain school events. You will notice posters posted around our campus. Please make sure you talk to children and make sure you secure any personal vaping items so that students do have access to them.

zoom_out_map

Campus and Student Threats are no Joke

Please take the time to talk to your children regarding the consequences that can come from making threats to an individual or campus or through social media. Socorro ISD and Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary, take all campus or student threats very seriously. Incidents that involve students making threats to other students, adults, and/or the school will be handled using the SISD Student Code of Conduct and if necessary may lead to an investigation by our campus SRO.

Please talk to your child about the consequences that come with making threats to others. We appreciate your support.

Birthday Celebrations

As a reminder, students are not able to bring in cupcakes or snacks to celebrate a birthday. We have a high number of students with the following medical conditions

  • Food Allergies to gluten, peanuts, eggs, wheat etc.
  • Lactose intolerant
  • Type I Diabetes.

In order to minimize their risk to exposing them to food items that may cause them physical harm, our campus does not accept any type of treat that will be consumed on campus. Please help us keep all of our students safe. Classroom teachers will make sure your child feels special that day by singing to them and may provide them with an item to distinguish that it is their birthday. You are welcome to send them to school with a birthday sash or button.

How is this different from allowable treat days and treat parties earned for incentives?

Allowable treat days and incentive days are planned days that allow parents to work alongside educators and the campus to ensure their child is taken care of by offering alternatives and ensure they are not feel excluded. Thank you for your support.

Inclement Weather Reminders

It is that time of year when we need to prepare for extreme weather. Below you will find:

  • Weather Guidelines that are followed
  • Reminders of Procedures
  • When reminders are sent out.
In the event of any inclement weather decisions, we will follow the practices listed below.

Morning Two Hour Delays

Morning delays are decided and announced by Socorro ISD. An effort is made to make a decision by 6am the day of inclement weather. The district will consider, temperatures and road conditions to ensure the safety of all students. We ask that you keep in mind that a decision is made based on the needs of all students, especially bus students that may have to wait for a bus as early as 6:30am or school students that may have to wait outside of the building.

Message is issued out by:

  • SISD Through Social Media, Phone, Text and email
  • Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary Parent Liaison Brittany Burnette will repost on ClassDojo.

Morning 2-Hour Delay Information:

  • Campus cafeteria doors will open at 9:00am
  • Breakfast served in cafeteria from 9:00am to 9:30am
  • First bell: 9:30am (students on campus will be sent to classrooms)
  • Tardy Bell 9:45 am
  • PE schedule will be adjusted (30 min PE times)
  • Regular Lunch schedule will be followed.

Afterschool Inclement Weather Dismissal

In the event of inclement weather, we will share this information with our community through TEXT, EMAIL, and CLASSDOJO.

Decisions for inclement weather are made no later than 2:15 pm for ALL grade levels.

This means that we may call for inclement weather and the weather will immediately clear OR we may not call for inclement weather on time. Note that we use forecasts, radar maps, and national/local advisories to make decisions. Inclement weather can be called in the event of precipitation, low temperatures, or high winds.

2:45 Dismissal

PK and Kinder

  • Students will be picked up in their classrooms. Side doors for arrival will be opened. All parents will have to park and enter the building to pick up their child from their classroom.

3:15 Dismissal: All siblings will report to their younger siblings' classroom

1st -3rd

  • All main building doors will open and parents will come in to pick up their child from the classroom.
4th and 5th grade

Please be patient during this process. Student safety is the priority.

zoom_out_map

Arriving on time

  • Doors and Gates will open at 7:00 am

  • Tardy Bell will ring at 7:45
  • Breakfast in the classroom will be served from 7:30-7:45 am
