Message from Nicole Pease Principal
Happy Chilly Friday, what we expected would be a five day week all of the sudden wasn't. Maybe it was because of the snow dance we did on Monday? It is so nice to have the fresh snow for sledding! The week before Thanksgiving, DCS students in K-2 created balloon floats to be carried in our version of the Macy's Day Parade. The Dublin PD joined and Chief Suokko created his own float. This is such a sweet tradition.
Students were busy on Monday creating their beautiful flower lanterns in Art. I hope you will be able to join us for the Lantern Parade tomorrow evening. Line up behind the M+T bank to start the parade at 6pm. Don't forget to stop by the Peterborough Library to see the special Holiday Tree from our amazing caring students!
Today our students got to explore the inside of a whale. What am awesome adventure! Thanks to our PTO for their support! Stay warm this weekend, Nicole
Art with Justin Bentley-Melle
Our students continue to expand their creative practice as they imagine, plan, create, reflect, and share. This week we looked at works by Piet Mondrian for inspiration for independent projects. We also enjoyed building lanterns with Children and the Arts. Students are very excited to be invited to carry their beautiful lanterns with the ConVal community again this December 6th. The 2025 Lantern Festival will be scheduled on the weekend of December 5th in Peterborough with a Garden of Light lantern parade at 6pm on Saturday, December 6th. Please visit https://www.childrenandthearts.org/annual-lantern-festival for updates and more information about program events.
Grade 3/4/5 Team with Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Garland
Well, the excitement at the end of our hallway was definitely the first snowfall of the year! The talk is about sledding, fort building, and skiing! Snow pants, coat, boots, hat, and gloves are a must daily!
For Social/Emotional Learning, Mrs. Garland’s class started the Second Step program with a lesson on how to state what happens in their brains when they learn a new skill. Mrs. Quinn’s class has been developing strategies with rethinking in mind.
For ELA, the third graders read, listened, discussed, and wrote about the characteristics of amphibians, focusing on frogs. The children started their giant animal classification/characteristics mural to display their learning. They also practiced the suffixes and prefixes. Across the hall, fourth- and fifth-graders have begun holiday-themed chapter books. For grammar, they are looking at adjectives and adverbs. This carries over into their writing as they develop the plots of their narratives.
During math class, the third-grade students are working on using algorithms to subtract within 1,000. The fourth graders continue to explore fractions through addition & subtraction with like denominators and reading a ruler. At the same time, the fifth graders have started a new unit focused on multiplying fractions.
In science, the students will do several experiments focused on erosion, deposition & the water cycle, as well as create a Land & Water Dictionary. Completing and presenting their individual state projects was super exciting for the fifth graders. If you see a fifth grader, ask them to tell you about Michigan, California, and/or Alaska!
Grades 1 and 2 with Mrs. Fletcher
One of our favorite moments this season was having Chief Suokko visit to read Balloons Over Broadway! We learned how the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began and how Tony Sarg used creative thinking—even as a kid—to solve problems. The students loved hearing how he once fed his chickens without even getting out of bed, and how he worked hard to design balloons that could fly high without floating away. We also laughed at some of the past parade mishaps!
Afterward, students designed their own parade balloons and proudly marched in our very own DCS Parade, with Chief Suokko leading the way. He even created his own cardboard police car—complete with rechargeable lights—that now lives in our classroom. What a fun celebration of creativity and our wonderful small town!
We are also wrapping up our CKLA reading unit, “Different Lands, Similar Stories.” Students have become experts at comparing and contrasting folktales from around the world. They can now identify the continents and countries where each story began, too! We can’t wait to dive into our next unit: Geography!
Kindergarten with Mrs. Lang
Our short week was an exciting one in Kindergarten! Chief Suokko visited to read Balloons Over Broadway, which launched our Thanksgiving project. Inspired by the story, students designed their own parade balloons and proudly marched them in our DCS version of the Thanksgiving Day Parade last Friday—so much fun!!
In math, we’re wrapping up current skills and getting ready to dive into what addition and subtraction really mean. Big math thinkers ahead!
