Principal's Pen...

Can you believe it's May already?

Families, we are nearing the end of the school year and we want our students to finish strong. Our third and fourth graders just completed the M-Step State Test and we are very proud of how hard they worked and how they stay focused during testing. There are a few more assessments coming up to allow your kids to demonstrate how much they've learned and grown this school year. The NWEA test will begin this month along with students DRA reading test in grades K-4; encourage them to do their very best.

Special Thank you to our wonderful parents for helping to keep our parking lot safe for the kids, we are seeing a decrease with parents blocking the second lane to drop off and pick up kids. Also, parents have stopped parking near the bus lot as we asked and this helps our buses and kids board and depart safely.

Thank you all for continuing to entrust your children with us daily and for partnering with us to keep them safe.

Your Educational Partner,

Mrs. Bryant

The Passionate Principal

Traffic Safety at Drop-off and Pick-up

We have been noticing cars attempting to drop off/pick-up from the middle lane, this is NOT safe for our kids or other drivers. Please use the curb lane only for that purpose. Also, when walking your kid(s) across the parking lot, please use the "Blue" cross walk closest to the front door for safety.

Thank you!

Dear Kindergarten Families

Wow we have already made it to May! This month we will be exploring and discovering more science and math concepts. In addition to reading various books, your child will be engaging in more challenging writing experiences. Please continue to work at home with writing sight words as well as sounding out words they do not know.

In math, we are continuing to work on addition, subtraction, graphing, and shapes (both 2D and 3D shapes). For science we studied chicks and will be moving on to plants and weather.

As the weather gets warmer, remember to send your child with appropriate shoes (no flip flops) and water bottles.

We have enjoyed working with your child this year and are amazed with their academic growth!

Mrs. Bianchi, Ms. Binert, and Ms. Nadrowski

Hello First Grade Families

Hello First Grade Families! It's so nice to have warmer weather each day! Remember to have your child dress for the daily. We do go outside for recess every day unless it is raining or muddy. Please keep the "Student Dress Code" in mind when your child dresses for the warmer weather, too! No spaghetti straps, no tank tops ,and short/skirts must be longer than fingertip length when their arms are down at their sides. As our reading is improving and your child is reading more at home, remember to ask your child lots of questions about the details in the story (the characters, setting, plot, etc.). They should be able to retell the story with lots of details and in sequence too. Comprehension is just as important as being able to read a story especially as the reading gets harder. We have been working on telling time here at school. This is a very difficult skill to master. Practicing at home with an analog clock (one with hands) will not only build their skills, but their confidence too!

As always, let us know if you have any question. We're here to help!

Your First Grade Teachers,

Mrs. Garden, Mrs. Mounsey, and Mrs. Stremer

Greeting Second Grade Families

Hello Second Grade Families, This is the last marking period for students to rise to the challenge and show all that they have learned this year! Our final math and reading NWEA state tests, as well as our last Dra reading test, will be completed this month. Students should get a good night's sleep, and eat a healthy breakfast before testing. Please talk to your child about taking his/her time and beating his/her personal goal. Students will continue sharpening their measurement skills in math, and will be moving on to our nonfiction unit in literacy. We will be reading, writing, and presenting information about the animal students chose to research. We will end this unit with a virtual trip to the zoo! Please continue to have your child practice reading at home for 15-20 minutes daily, practice reading and writing sight words, and practice adding and subtracting math facts through 20. For an added challenge, students can practice adding and subtracting double digits with regrouping (carrying and borrowing). Thanks for your help at home!

Educationally yours,

The Second Grade Team

Mrs. Albulov, Mrs. Brashear, Ms. Carlin, and Mrs. Tibbs

Hey there Third Grade Families

Dear Families,

We made it to May! We finished the MSTEP and now we will be starting our NWEA tests in both reading and math. Please make sure that your child is eating a healthy breakfast and getting enough sleep. Ask your child what their goal is! We want all student to be able to beat their spring goal this year. The warm weather is upon us.... remember the school dress code - no flip flops, short shorts etc. Topics we will be covering this month include fractions, measurement, division and multiplication, realistic fiction and non fiction texts, and Michigan facts/history. Thank you for all you do for your child's education!

Thank you for all of your support!

Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Cunningham, Mrs. Love, and Mrs. Pettway

Hello Fourth Grade Families

Happy May Fourth Grade Students and Families,

Spring is finally beginning to feel like it is in the air. Hopefully the winter coats can be put away for the season! Please make sure your child has a sweatshirt or light jacket for the windier, cooler days. Please make sure your child wears covered shoes for foot safety on the playground. Open toe shoes, sandals, and slides are not recommended due to the woodchips on the playground. Thank you to our students for persevering and applying academic personal best on the MSTEP assessment. We worked hard in preparing best testing strategies and reviewing skills that would be assessed. Fourth grade will next proceed to NWEA testing in early May. Please continue to encourage your child to take his/her time on reading each question thoroughly, analyze answer selections, and use the printed text and text features to help him/her select the best answer(s). Also, please try to minimize screen time/electronics, promote healthy eating habits, and encourage a calm nightly routine. We have worked very hard all year and each child should persevere in order to maximize learning success. We believe in our students and wish them all the best! Our team will continue to support our students to finish our school year with a strong vision and strive to use their manners with others. Lets remember to lift each other up with positivity, encouragement, and understanding. Sometimes we just need to take a mindful moment, a deep breath, and center our core with calmness. We are a team; Together We Are Better! FYI...4th grade will be taking a short field trip to Owen Intermediate School on May 24th to tour the building, have an opportunity to ask questions pertaining to their 5th grade journey, and visit with the principal.

Educationally yours,

Ms. Ali, Ms. Dagenais, and Mrs. Gyulveszi

Happy May!! The sunshine and warmer temperatures really have us all thinking about summer, but we still have lots of learning to do! Please continue to help your students with their 30 minutes of Daily Reading, 10 minutes of reading to themselves, 10 minutes of them reading to someone, and 10 minutes of someone reading to them. We must all work together to make sure our students are focusing on school and what they need to do to finish the year strong!!

Staying safe from COVID-19 Information... We all need to do our part to keep schools open to in-person learning

The mask mandate has been lifted and is now recommended but not mandatory.

Maintaining the health and safety of our school community is of utmost importance, particularly during this unprecedented pandemic situation. Providing a safe environment is a partnership between parents/guardians and the school district. VBPS has put into place many measures to keep our students and staff safe while they are in school. We ask that our parents and guardians help to prevent the spread of COVID, as well as other illnesses by:

  • Following the COVID-19 checklist guidelines
  • Reporting to the nurse if your child or any household member tests positive for COVID, or if they have an actual or suspected COVID exposure
  • Keeping your child home when they are sick,
  • Promptly picking your child up if they become sick at school,
  • Alerting the school nurse about any planned travel to discuss the required post-quarantine guideline, prior to sending your child back to school

Please contact Nurse Dionisia Munoz with any questions or concerns related to COVID-19 or other health-related issues involving the school. dmunoz@vanburenschools.net

Students who are sick must not attend school. If a student presents to be sick when at school they will be sent home and provided instructions about the possible need to quarantine. Siblings of students who are ill may also need to quarantine. We rely on our County Health Department to guide us accordingly.
