π Just a Little Note
We are excited to grow our PTA and parent involvement this year by bringing in fresh faces, new ideas, and more ways for families to be involved. Parent support is what makes many of our special events and extras possible, and without enough volunteers, there may simply be fewer of those opportunities. Involvement does not have to happen during the school day or require a large time commitment. Be on the lookout for a Google Form coming soon with all of our volunteer opportunities.
After several parent requests for another way to help, we have also created a building wish list to support and celebrate our students and staff throughout the year. Our teachers and students are already so appreciative of the items that have been donated!
π GSE Must Know Info
Students who arrive after 8:20 a.m. should check in at the office and pick up a tardy slip to give to their teacher.
If your studentβs dismissal plans change, please call the office at 913-856-3750. All changes, including car rider/walker status or who is picking up your student, must come directly from a parent or guardian.
If you email your studentβs teacher about a dismissal change, please include our school secretaries: Amy Comstock: comstocka@usd231.com
Jessica Cortright: cortrightj@usd231.com
If you arrive before 8:00 a.m., please keep your child in the vehicle. In the car line, pull forward as far as possible without blocking the crosswalk. If you are first, pull up to the βXβ shown on the map to help prevent traffic from backing up onto the road.
π Grand Star PTA Information
Please consider joining our PTA! Parent involvement is what makes so many of our school events, activities, and opportunities possible. We truly rely on parent support to help make these things happen. Whether you can volunteer at an event, help behind the scenes, or just join as a member, your involvement really does make a difference.
Join our PTA Facebook page to stay connected and up to date! We share important information about upcoming events, fundraisers, PTA meetings, volunteer opportunities, and more.

π· Counselor Corner with Mrs. Taylor
All students have now had their first lesson with me! We started with an introduction to my role as the school counselor. Students learned how to set up an appointment with me, what confidentiality means, and how I am here to help all Grand Star students. I look forward to seeing everyone again next month!
Please donβt hesitate to reach out if you ever have questions, concerns, or need support. You can contact me by phone at 913-856-3775, by email at taylorle@usd231.com, or by text at 913-228-3010.
Second Step SEL (Social-Emotional Learning): Lesson 1
We Watch. We Listen. We Think.
Your child learned that paying attention means watching, listening, and thinking carefully about something. They practice different ways of showing theyβre paying attention.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to show you how they can pay attention, for example, when you are reading a story with them or explaining how to do something.
Time to Pay Attention
You child learned that paying attention can look different depending on the situation, for example, listening to the teacher during a lesson, or looking both ways before crossing the street.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to show you how they can pay attention, for example, when you are reading a story with them, explaining a task, or crossing the street.
How to Get Good at Something
Your child learned that their best skills have developed as a result of practicing, trying hard, and asking for help.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to share with you what theyβre good at and how they became good at it. Share with them something youβre good at and what you did to practice and try hard, and who you asked for help.
Changing Your Brain
Your child learned that when they learn something new, the brain changes as different parts of the brain begin to send messages to each other.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to explain what happens in their brain when they learn something for the first time.
Setting a Good Class Goal
Students worked in small groups to come up with ways to make their classroom a better place. Each group chose one idea to turn into a group goal. They learned that a good goal should be specific, challenging, doable and something the group feels excited about.
Try This at Home: Ask your child about their groupβs goal. What is their group trying to do? What makes their goal exciting or challenging? What does it mean for a goal to be doable? Share a goal youβve worked on with others and what helped your group succeed.
