Meet the Teacher Evening
Wednesday, September 11th
Meet the Teacher: On Wednesday evening, September 11th (next week), we will host our Meet the Teacher night. We hope all parents and guardians can make it! This is a great time for parents/guardians to meet your child's teacher, learn about the school year, and find out more about how we can partner together in this important work. We'll start at 6:00pm by sharing information about our school-wide goals and the school year ahead, and then you can go to the classroom and meet your teacher.
Principal's Message
Hello Lincoln Community,
Happy second week of school! Although today was only the ninth school day, with schedules in place and routines established, it feels like we're well into the school year. Students are engaged in learning and working hard, they're reading, writing, and learning math. And, they continue to focus on contributing to the building of positive classroom communities. This week's pictures include examples of classroom expectations students have helped generate.
We had Several Firsts this Week: With staggered start completed, we had full kindergarten classes here everyday. We practiced our first Fire Drill. We had our first Community assemblies: 3rd-5th grades on Thursday and K-2nd grades on Friday. We also became more efficient with our arrival and dismissal routines. Everyone is learning a lot and the school is abuzz with the energy of the new school year.
Your Voice Matters: We have many opportunities for parents and family members to get involved. One of these is Site Council, which is a team of parent and staff leaders who focus on school improvement. The first meeting will be at 6:00 PM on Monday, September 16. If you're interested in participating, please let us know.
For Meet the Teacher Night - Plenty of Parking: Thank you to all of our parents and guardians for your partnership! We hope that all of you are able to attend our Meet the Teacher evening on Wednesday, September 11, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Parking will be available in the front parking lot, the backside of the school, the French Prairie MS parking lots, and across the street at the church. We'll start the evening by provided an overview of information and priorities for our school and school year, including Title 1A priorities, the parent-teacher compact, and more. Please come and join us!
Questions: Please feel free to send your questions or feedback to us at teresa.alfaro@woodburnsd.org or pmcdougal@woodburnsd.org. Go Dolphins!
Sincerely,
Teresa Alfaro - Principal

Ideas for Parents - Conversations with Your Students
After school each day, we encourage you to check in with your student to find out how it went. Some students are ready to talk right away, others may need a little time before they're ready. As a helpful guide, here are some questions you might consider, perhaps picking one or two each day.
- What made you smile today?
- What’s something new that you learned?
- What was something interesting that happened?
- Who is someone who helped you today?
- What are you most proud of today?
- What students did you spend time with today?
- Who did you sit with during lunch?
- What did you do during recess and who was with you?
- What did you learn during (math, reading, etc.)?
- What was the most difficult thing that happened today?
- If you could change one thing about today, what would it be?
- What’s something that you’re looking forward to getting to do tomorrow?

Classroom Expectations Students Helped Create
Emergency Drills - We Practice Regularly
- Teachers, staff, and students knew what to do and were prepared for the Fire Drill.
- Classes exited in a calm, quiet, and orderly manner.
- Classes lined up in a designated area outside the building and teachers took attendance.
- Everyone was out of the building in less than 3 minutes.
Lockdown Drill: Our first Lockdown Drill will be on Friday next week, September 13. As with our first Fire Drill, you may want to talk with your student about the Lockdown Drill ahead of time to help him or her to be ready. Here are some lockdown drill rules to share.
- When you hear the announcement that we are in a Lockdown
- STOP what you are doing
- Be QUIET and LISTEN for adult directions
- Stay in or move to a SAFE place
- WAIT until the Lockout ends
Future Emergency Drills: Additionally, on Tuesday, September 17, students will participate in a bus evacuation drill. Then, in mid-October we will practice an Earthquake Drill. We will continue to provide more specifics on these drills prior to our first ones of the year.
Next Week on Thursday: Volunteer Gathering at Lincoln
Coming Soon: Kindergarten Literacy Workshop
A Look Ahead: Anti-Bullying BMX School Assembly
We're excited to host a BIG AIR BMX Show on September 25th featuring some of the world’s top Pro BMX Athletes in a 40-minute action-packed school assembly. The BMX athletes will deliver powerful positive messages focused on character and anti-bullying.
Student-Parent Handbook - Woodburn School District
Each year throughout the Woodburn School District we distribute the Student-Parent Handbook. This is an important resource that provides information about rights and responsibilities, expectations and accountability, and systems and procedures. Today we sent it home in the backpack of your student. It's also linked here in English, Spanish, and Russian.
- English: Student-Parent Handbook
- Español: Manual Para Estudiantes y Padres
- Russian: Руководство для учеников и родителей
Every Day Matters - Focus on Attendance
This year we are continuing to pay close attention to ensuring that children are present at school regularly, because Every Day Matters.
Setting High Goals: We're focusing on attendance because last year 58% of our students were regular attenders (attended more than 90% of the days) and 42% were chronically absent (attended less than 90% of the days). The 58% was an improvement from the previous year when we had 51% of our students who were regular attenders. For the current school year our school leadership has set the goal to improve from 58% up to 70%. WE CAN DO IT!
So Important: There's a very strong correlation between good attendance and student success in school. Please see the visual below for more information.
