Around the School Spotlight
Our 4th and 5th grade choir held an amazing evening performance on Tuesday night, at the direction of Mrs. Aldinger! They sang so beautifully and with pride. On Wednesday, they took their talents to The Ackerly and sang for the residents, which I’m sure was the highlight of their holiday season!
Todays Food Drive Update
Wow! Hawks View Hawks are amazing! Our final tally this afternoon was 7,123 food items, with 1,728 items coming in today. Our goal was 6,000 items. Way to go Hawks! This will go a long way in helping our local families that may need a little extra help this year. Our families are the best!
Toy Collection Due Date Change
Please note that the collection due date for the Elks Club Toy Drive donations is Wednesday, December 13th. This will give us time to gather them all and get them to the Elks for packing day on 12/15. Thank you to all of our families who have sent in new, unwrapped toys. The toys shown were collected in just two days! They often receive plenty of toys for younger children, and find themselves in need of more for teens. Some ideas include: small gift cards, nail polish, footballs, basketballs, fuzzy socks, hair care, etc. This year, there are a larger amount of teenage boys being supported, if that helps as you consider donations. Thank you so much for your generosity - I know the Elks Lodge is very grateful.
Lost and Found Items
Our lost and found items are now located in the front entry area until Friday, December 15th. All unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity over winter break.
Tardies & Morning Drop Off
We are noticing many tardy students in the mornings. Just a reminder that the bell to start class rings at 7:55 a.m. Any student not in their classroom at 7:55 a.m. is considered tardy. If you are dropping your child off in the morning, please leave enough time for them to get from the parking lot to their classroom before 7:55 a.m. Our doors are open at 7:30am for students to be in the gym if they get here before classrooms open.
We also ask that you please use extra caution in the parking lots at school: drive slowly, watch for pedestrians and follow the school's traffic pattern in the lot at all times.
As a reminder, please do not park and get out of your vehicle in the car line during drop off or pick up. If you need to get out for any reason, we ask that you pull into a nearby parking spot and unload OR we have several staff members in our car line who are happy to help a child get out of the car. Doing so will allow our line to move quickly and efficiently. Thank you!
Lastly, we would like to give a shout out to all of our crossing guards and other staff members that are outside in the weather every morning and every afternoon, helping to keep our students safe.
Student Illness & Attendance
Our district is committed to continued communication and support with attendance. Absences can add up and it’s almost a given kids will get sick throughout the year. Please keep your child home if they are sick. We certainly don’t expect attendance to come at the cost of their health. If your child is struggling with coming to school due to anxiety, social issues, feeling behind academically, or any other reason, we are here to help.
Health Room Clothing
If your student has borrowed any clothing from our health room, please launder and return to the office so that we have it available for other students to use. As you clean out closets and drawers, please keep us in mind if you are donating gently used clothing. Our health room is currently in need of pants for boys and girls, small and medium sizes. Thank you for keeping us in mind.
Attendance Matters!
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school, and is important for academic success and social well-being - even for our youngest learners! During the winter months our district often sees increases in student absences across grade levels -- particularly after longer breaks such as our upcoming Winter Break.
To help your student be successful at school, it’s important to have a good routine at home that leads to regular attendance. When getting ready to come back to school after the Winter Break, here are some tips that can help re-establish your “time for school” routine:
Set a regular bedtime and morning routine
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks/lunches the night before.
Develop a backup plan for getting to school in the event of a transportation issue.
Try to schedule non-emergency medical appointments or extended trips for days when school isn’t in session, or during after school hours.
If your child seems anxious about coming to school, talk with your child’s teacher to partner on helping your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
If you have additional challenges or concerns that prevent regular attendance, please contact our school office so we can assist you in connecting to resources that will support good school attendance.
In addition, we want to support families in being more aware of their child’s attendance. Beginning next week, families of students with declining attendance will begin receiving updates via email letters or by phone. The goal with these notifications is to ensure all parents/guardians are provided with timely information as our partners in improving school attendance.
We hope our students and families enjoy the upcoming Winter Break, and we look forward to welcoming all of our students back to school on Wednesday, January 3.
