Big Thumb Conference Leadership and Sportsmanship Summit
Twenty Dryden High School student-athletes, along with Coaches Sam Peyerk, Hunter Gall, Jill Grusnick, and Paul Abromaitis and Athletic Director Brian Tresnak, attended the Big Thumb Conference Leadership and Sportsmanship Summit at Mayville High School on March 19. Students engaged in breakout sessions and discussions focused on becoming positive leaders, handling internal and external conflicts, and creating a more welcoming environment at Dryden High
School for visiting teams and spectators.
Dryden Baseball starting pitcher Ian Tresnak appreciated the assembly of all Big Thumb Conference schools. “The presentation really shared what a true leader is,” Tresnak shared. “It was good to have the conference there together for that kind of message.”
Motivational speaker Rob Miller of Proactive Coaching shared valuable insights with the audience. Nick Abromaitis, Dryden multi- sport athlete, found encouragement in Miller’s words. “He was a really positive guy,” Abromaitis, a member of the Varsity Cross Country, Basketball, Bowling, Track, and Golf teams reported. “The way Mr. Miller viewed leadership and sportsmanship was inspirational,” he added.
Another lesson learned was how student-athlete behavior impacts teammates and opponents. “We talked about right and wrong in sports and how you have to give your all for yourself and your team
and how your actions matter,” noted eighth grader Jeffrey Taylor. His classmate, Willow DuBuis, agreed. “We got to learn how we can have better leadership and sportsmanship in our school,” DuBuis commented.
"We're incredibly proud of our student-athletes for attending the Big Thumb Conference Leadership and Sportsmanship Summit,” stated Athletic Director Brian Tresnak. “It was a great opportunity for our athletes and coaches to learn about becoming stronger leaders, handling challenges both on and off the field and court, and creating a positive environment for everyone involved in Dryden High School athletics. The breakout sessions were valuable, and our athletes left with tools to not only improve themselves but also positively impact our school culture. Rob Miller’s insightful presentation was a fantastic learning experience for all involved. We look forward to using these lessons to make Dryden High School athletics even more welcoming and supportive for visiting teams and spectators."
Proactive Coaching works with coaches, teams, and leaders of industry to help intentionally create character-based team cultures, provide a blueprint for team leadership, and develop confident, tough- minded, fearless competitors. They have provided in person presentations to over 1.5 million people across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. “I thought it was really fun, entertaining, and inspiring,” commented 8th grader Kieran Schultz. “It was really nice listening to the speaker,” he added.
“The conference was a very good learning experience,” reflected junior Mallory Barker, a member of Dryden’s Varsity Volleyball and Track teams. “It helped us recognize what we need to work on as a
school, sportsmanship-wise. It also helped me recognize what I needed to work on within myself to become a better leader in the sports I am a part of.”
“I learned how to be a better leader for my team and teammates,” junior Rowan Handley commented. A member of the Varsity Football, Basketball, and Baseball teams, Handley continued, “I learned how important it is for a team to have a good leader.”
Random Student of the Week
Willow DuBuis
Willow DuBuis is an 8th-grade student who has been at Dryden since GSRP. She is involved in basketball, volleyball, track, and drama club. Her favorite thing about Dryden is the small size, where everyone knows each other, making it a better place. Outside of school, she enjoys hanging out with friends. Willow’s dream career is to work in the medical field with animals, as she has always wanted to be a vet. She is looking forward to having more opportunities for sports and clubs in high school and the chance to participate in early college classes.
