Week 6

Dear Elmore School Families,

Week 6 is on the books and the school year is well underway. We had our 25th day of school this week, but the kids keep saying it feels like 50! I'm taking that as a good sign because the kids are so comfortable and engaged already. Coming back together after the summer brake doesn't take us long to pick back up where we left off. This is one of the many benefits of being in a multiage, one room school.

Many thanks to everyone for coming out on Thursday night for our Open House! It was so nice to see all the families come together and kids proudly showing their work and our classroom.

This week students began writing their personal narratives, They learned about using temporal words (transition words), writing a hook, and how to include dialogue. I have been meeting with groups to work on targeted reading skills, and during whole group lessons, we have been: practicing phonological awareness drills (orally manipulating sounds); phonics lessons (applying letters to the sounds we hear or sounds to the letters we see); and engaging in vocabulary lessons.

In math this week, 1st and 2nd graders completed their second section of the first unit. This week they used data to create picture graphs and bar graphs and developed questions about they graphs and then answered each others questions. 3rd graders match drawing, diagrams, and situations involving equal groups (multiplications) situations. Then they matched multiplication expressions to representations. Finally, they learned about the different parts of a multiplication equations (factors and products) and wrote multiplication equations about representations.

On Monday we have our annual field trip to the Elmore Fire Station where students will learn about fire safety. I will be sending home a few activities for students to do at home with families. This include developing or reviewing your home fire safety plan. This is also a good time to assure your child knows your street address and how to call 911 for emergency help.

Our first day of ECO (Educating Children Outdoors) will be next Friday, October 9th. Our first off sight ECO class will be October 16th, when the students will be walking to the Elmore State Park. We are in need of firewood, and welcome donations of dry, smaller pieces of seasoned firewood and kindling.

Lunch:

We have our first Family Hot Lunch of the school year this week on Monday! Meg Witherbee is bringing Shepards Pie! We encourage everyone to participate in family Hot Lunch, though students may bring lunch from home if they choose to. There is NO school lunch available when we have family Hot Lunch. School Hot Lunch next week will be available on Tuesday and Thursday . See the Menu below for options. Meat sandwiches or PB&J are available Tuesday-Friday. Please send me an email at mailto:diane.nicholls@lamoillesouth.org with your orders for the week by 6:00 pm on Sunday.

I am honored to be the teacher at the Elmore School. This is my 7th year at the Elmore School and 19th in the LSSU School Districts. I love teaching at the Elmore School and feel very lucky to be part of the community. I have a passion for helping students achieve their best, and look forward to working with your child this year! I earned my BA in Elementary Education with a certification in Early Childhood Education from Johnson State College. I later earned my MA from the University of Vermont in Curriculum and Instruction in 2013. In addition in teaching, I am a certified child yoga teacher, and work at a summer day camp with a focus on yoga and mindfulness.
