Ralya's Rising Leaders: Meet the RSL Team! Ralya's Rising Leaders: Meet the RSL Team!

Get ready to be inspired! Ralya Elementary is proud of the 2024-2025 Ralya Student Leadership (RSL) Team! This dynamic group of 4th and 5th graders is stepping up to make a real difference in our school community. These students were selected for their leadership potential, their commitment to helping others, and their enthusiasm for making Ralya an even better place.

The RSL team isn't just a club; it's a vital part of our school's culture. These young leaders are taking on a proactive role, identifying needs within our school and developing creative solutions to address them. They're focusing on ways to support their fellow students, promote kindness and inclusivity, and contribute to a positive learning environment for everyone.

What kinds of things are the RSL team working on?:

  • Promote school-wide events and school spirit: RSL members communicate with classrooms about Ralya news and upcoming events to encourage students and families to engage in our school community. They even helped make a holiday spirit week before winter break.

  • Leading community service projects: Members have been able to serve at PTO fundraising nights and are currently selling Smencils (scented pencils) every Friday to raise money for a local organization!

  • Mentoring younger students: Teams of two or three members regularly visit with their “buddy class”; a 2nd or 3rd grade class that they are paired with for the year. These visits include reminders of the Ralya CARES expectations for behavior, reading books about important topics together, or even just playing a game to build friendships.

  • Brainstorming and implementing improvements: The RSL team has communication boxes posted around Ralya and takes ideas, suggestions and concerns from the student body with them to regular meetings to discuss how to make Ralya even better!

The RSL team is committed to making a positive impact and they're excited about working with students, teachers, and families to achieve their goals. Keep an eye out for updates on their projects in future newsletters and on the school website. We're incredibly proud of these rising leaders and can't wait to see the amazing things they accomplish this year!

A special thank you to Valerie Butikofer, Emily Proctor and Korina Trufant for their dedication to advising and supporting the RSL team!

As an elementary physical education teacher, I am passionate about fostering a love of sports and fitness in our children. Introducing students to athletics early can help inspire a lifelong dedication for physical activity and healthy living. I recently created a "Wall of Fame" in our Murphy gym, showcasing our own Haslett High School athletes. Large posters were created using photographs from local resources. This provided tangible role models for our elementary students, demonstrating that hard work and dedication lead to great achievements. Seeing successful local athletes foster community pride, showing younger students they are part of a larger athletic community that celebrates success.

This project offers numerous benefits to our community. Highlighting our high school athletes has a positive community impact. It builds school spirit and unity among students, staff, and parents. The "Wall of Fame" is also a great way to engage the community in supporting our schools and celebrating our young athletes' achievements. We are incredibly grateful to our PTO for their generous sponsorship of this project, without which this inspiring addition to our gym would not have been possible. Their commitment to our students and their well-being was truly appreciated.

A key aspect of this project is ensuring a diverse selection of student athletes. We showcase a wide range of sports, from traditional team sports such as football and basketball to individual sports like swimming and track and field. We also highlight athletes with various abilities, including those who participated in adapted sports programs. This demonstrates to our elementary students that athletic success comes in many forms and that everyone has the potential to achieve greatness in their own way.

The impact on the aspiring athletes has been significant. Seeing the success of older athletes has inspired younger students to work hard and pursue their own athletic goals. The "Wall of Fame" even served as a platform for high school athletes to mentor younger students, sharing experiences and advice. These posters provide powerful role models, showing what is possible with dedication and hard work. I believe this "Wall of Fame" is a valuable addition to our elementary gym, with Murphy students even telling me, ”I want to be up there when I am in high school.”
