Woodland ROAR Report
Feb. 6, 2026
From the Desk of Dr. Machak
Feb. 6, 2026
Dear Woodland Families,
This week I had the pleasure of joining Woodland’s Black Dads Rock panel for dinner as they finalized preparations for their presentation at tomorrow’s Black History Month Celebration. This is the third consecutive year that Black Dads Rock will be sharing their stories, thoughts, and reflections celebrating Black culture and challenging harmful stereotypes about Black fatherhood. This group is so inspirational and I can’t wait to see them in action at our event. In addition to the “BDR” panel, tomorrow’s event will also feature student and community performances, community resource tables, student artwork, music, crafts, and more. You truly don’t want to miss it!
Another important milestone from this week: we officially hit the 100th day of school! They say that time flies when you’re having fun, and I hope that rings true for your Wildcat. Our educators and administrators are always looking for ways to make learning fun and engaging, and I love seeing these efforts in action whenever I visit our classrooms.
As you read through the rest of this newsletter, please note our upcoming events in your calendars. Next week the PTA invites you to enjoy pizza for lunch or dinner for their “2nd Tuesday” Restaurant Fundraiser. We created a special Parent University presentation on the topic of Helping Kids Form Healthy Relationships and Social Skills based on parent requests for more tips and resources. Finally, if anyone knows how to bring people together for family fun, it’s our Parent Mentor Team! Our fantastic Parent Mentors are hosting Winter Fest on Feb. 20 to help us all beat the winter blues. Come for the fun, stay for the Britney Spears playlist!
Wishing you all a safe and happy weekend,
Dr. Robert Machak, Superintendent

Parent Voice: Woodland Invites You to Take the 5Essentials Survey
Woodland participates in the State of Illinois 5Essentials Survey annually because we believe the survey provides a unique opportunity for students, teachers, and parents to have a voice in improving our schools. Your opinions are important to us and by participating in this survey you can help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement.
Key Details:
- The survey takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.
- Your identity and responses will be kept confidential and will not be connected to your child.
- The state will only release the results to schools in which at least 20% of the parents/guardians have completed the survey.
- If you have more than one child, you may elect to participate multiple times.
- We actively use your feedback from this survey throughout the year!
Please Complete the 2026 Illinois Parent Survey by March 13, 2026!

Kindergarten Planning Starts Soon
Do you know any incoming Kindergarten children?
This is the time of year when we start our outreach to incoming Kindergarten students. We share information on the Primary website, and with local preschool programs, but we also rely on our current families to help share the information by word of mouth. Some parents may not know that planning for Kindergarten starts this early, so please help us make that connection.
Follow the Kindergarten 2026-2027 page for updates about events and registration information coming soon. On this page you will see that the next event is our Wildcat Welcome on March 11!
Woodland has a full-day kindergarten program for our students. We have a monolingual kindergarten and a dual-language kindergarten. Information about how to register, what each program looks like, and much more will be available for parents to review to ensure they choose the program that will fit them best.

Parent University - Virtual Event
The development of social skills and healthy relationships during early childhood is vital to a child’s success in relationships, career and overall life satisfaction. Parents and caregivers have the power to nurture this area of growth, so that their children are able to develop strong bonds with others, express themselves clearly, and manage challenges presented by our ever-evolving social world. Understanding what contributes to successful “social development in early childhood”, as well as proven strategies for fostering it, will support your child or the children in your care on reaching their full potential. Presented by Adam Krieger, LCSW, and staff therapists with Warren Township Youth and Family Services.
Date: Monday, Feb. 23, 2026
Time: 6:00 p.m.

Spotlight On
Mentoring at the Gurnee Teen Center
Gurnee Teen Center is hosting the Big Brothers Big Sisters site-based Mentoring program! This new mentorship program will unite young people (Littles) with caring, positive adult role models (Bigs) in a professionally supported one-to-one mentoring friendship.
"Breaking societal barriers, closing opportunity gaps, and overcoming adversities."
The program will serve local youth ages 7 -18 who could benefit from extra encouragement, consistency, and support. This program aims to offer these children and teens new opportunities and someone in their corner, cheering them on, and help them build confidence, and show them what is possible for their future.
For more information on enrolling your child or volunteering, visit the Gurnee Teen Center for more information, the application process, and other helpful tools and resources.
Gurnee Police Department - Blue Envelope Program
The Gurnee Police Department is launching the Blue Envelope Program. This initiative is designed to enhance communication and promote safer and more positive interactions between police officers and individuals on the autism spectrum or with other communication needs.
This program provides a simple, clearly identifiable blue folder that individuals can present to a Gurnee police officer during any interaction, including traffic stops. The envelope enables participants to share essential information with the officer, including identification, vehicle registration, emergency contacts, and communication preferences. The purpose of this program is to improve safety, reduce anxiety, and prevent misunderstandings.
Participation in the Blue Envelope Program is voluntary and free. Anyone on the autism spectrum who lives, works, or spends time in Gurnee can pick up a Blue Envelope at a partnering location.
