McMillan Monthly
Information for our McMillan Community for October, 2025
From the Principal
Greetings McMillan families:
The 2025–26 school year is off to a strong start! We are excited to see students engaged in learning and activities. Stay up to date on events by following the McMillan School Calendar and the McMillan Athletics Calendar.
This year, we have seen one of the biggest increases in student attendance in the district and a decrease in classroom referrals, thanks in large part to families ensuring their children are at school and ready to learn. Your support makes a real difference in preparing students for success in middle school and beyond.
To continue fostering collaboration, this year’s Student-led Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held in the gym and cafeteria October 15 from 3:30 to 7 PM, and October 16 from 12:00 to 7 PM. When you arrive, you will receive your student’s MAP test scores along with a conference packet below. Students will use this packet to guide discussions with their teachers — either individually or in small groups — to review academic progress, behavior, and RULER reflections, helping them share their learning and personal growth with you. If you would like to donate snack items for a snack cart for our staff, please bring individually wrapped items to McMillan between now and October 15th. We have had success with families having Costco or Sams Club orders delivered to the school.
We appreciate your partnership and encourage you to participate fully in these conferences as we continue working together to support student success at McMillan.
Thank you for reading on, and leading on in your lives to support our students!
Very Respectfully,
Dr. Walters - McMillan Principal

October focus for October is KINDNESS Month!
Families! At McMillan, our staff uses what is called the R.U.L.E.R. approach to help our students with their feelings. Knowing how to work with our own feelings helps us to be kind and show empathy towards others. Keep an eye out for the R.U.L.E.R. tools that we will introduce over the next few months so we can be using them at home and school!

YMCA Lion's Pride Information and Update
Enrichment and Opportunity After School
McMillan Middle School is proud to partner with the YMCA to offer Lion’s Pride, our free after-school program designed to give students a safe, supportive, and engaging space to learn and grow beyond the classroom.
Under the leadership of Ms. Conley and the YMCA staff, students in Lion’s Pride participate in a wide range of activities and experiences. They connect with community partners through hands-on opportunities like bicycle repair, gaming, and cosmetology, while also having access to tutoring and academic support. Students can join the dance team, attend home athletic events, enjoy a free meal, and explore many other opportunities that encourage fun, creativity, and personal growth.
The program has become so popular that more than 150 students attend Lion’s Pride every day, and there is currently a waitlist due to high demand. Lion’s Pride meets after school from 3:15 to 6:00 PM, providing a meaningful extension of the school day where students can build relationships, discover new interests, and strengthen skills that support their success in and out of school.
For more information, please contact Ms. Conley at stefanie.conley@ops.org

Nurse Notes
Students enrolled in Omaha Public Schools are provided free health screenings in accordance with Nebraska State Statute. Screenings are conducted throughout the school year and may begin as early as August. Students in early childhood, kindergarten, first, second, third, fourth, seventh, and tenth grades are screened for hearing, vision, dental, height, and weight per the rules and regulations set forth by the state of Nebraska. The screening is conducted to help identify health concerns in as early a stage as possible, in an effort to enhance learning. Screening is not intended to be diagnostic, but to identify students with potential problems. Findings that need further evaluation by a health care provider will be sent home. Per Nebraska State Regulations, a parent/guardian may supersede the mandated school health screening by submitting a statement signed by an authorized health care provider attesting that the required screening has been completed in the previous six months. An updated healthcare provider statement must be submitted each school year. Contact your school nurse for any questions regarding screening.
